Business casual in the Oval Office?
White House unbuttons formal dress code
Photos of jacketless Obama at White House may signal subtle culture shift

President Barack Obama meets with his advisers in the Oval Office, including (from left) Vice President Joe Biden, Director of Management and Budget Peter Orszag, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and National Economic Director Lawrence Summers on Jan. 22.

By Sheryl Gay Stolberg

updated 1 hour, 23 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.

“He’s from Hawaii, O.K.?” said Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”

Thus did a rule of the George W. Bush administration — coat and tie in the Oval Office at all times — fall by the wayside, only the first of many signs that a more informal culture is growing up in the White House under new management. Mr. Obama promised to bring change to Washington and he has — not just in substance, but in presidential style.

Although his presidency is barely a week old, some of Mr. Obama’s work habits are already becoming clear. He shows up at the Oval Office shortly before 9 in the morning, roughly two hours later than his early-to-bed, early-to-rise predecessor. Mr. Obama likes to have his workout — weights and cardio — first thing in the morning, at 6:45. (Mr. Bush slipped away to exercise midday.)

He reads several papers, eats breakfast with his family and helps pack his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, off to school before making the 30-second commute downstairs — a definite perk for a man trying to balance work and family life. He eats dinner with his family, then often returns to work; aides have seen him in the Oval Office as late as 10 p.m., reading briefing papers for the next day.

“Even as he is sober about these challenges, I have never seen him happier,” Mr. Axelrod said. “The chance to be under the same roof with his kids, essentially to live over the store, to be able to see them whenever he wants, to wake up with them, have breakfast and dinner with them — that has made him a very happy man.”

In the West Wing, Mr. Obama is a bit of a wanderer. When Mr. Bush wanted to see a member of his staff, the aide was summoned to the Oval Office. But Mr. Obama tends to roam the halls; one day last week, he turned up in the office of his press secretary, Robert Gibbs, who was in the unfortunate position of having his feet up on the desk when the boss walked in.

“Wow, Gibbs,” the press secretary recalls the president saying. “Just got here and you already have your feet up.” Mr. Gibbs scrambled to stand up, surprising Mr. Obama, who is not yet accustomed to having people rise when he enters a room.

4. Wow. What a fascist Bush was.
Locking people out for being late. Chewing people out for wearing khakis on the weekends. More interested in the appearance of doing the job well than actually doing the job well. Pathetic.

My God, what a refreshing change Obama is.

24. And absolutely in line with all of his "regrets" about things that
occurred while he was in office - they were all essentially criticisms of the way various photo-ops were staged!! It was "all appearance, all the time" with that pathetic little clown!

30. Exactly
Being President is not a typical 9-5 job. That was a huge problem with *. He honestly thought that his workday came to an end. And that wearing a jacket made him more professional.

8. Yeah, that would be funny to see...
also, the look on President Obama's face when people stand up for him. I bet he'll never get used to that. He's such a down to earth, laid back kind of guy. I think in many ways he still sees himself as a Senator, which is why he was doing un-Presidential things the other day when he visited Congress, such as talking to reporters like a Senator would.

7. Didn't Clinton keep things casual?
The article I think is putting a little to much focus on this I think, marking it as a "cultural shift".

I'm pretty sure I remember Clinton in the White House without suit jackets. It doesn't seem that earth shattering to me.

Interesting article anyway...

13. He did
and so did others before Reagan/Bush² - it's just a fluff piece, it has something for everyone. Right-wingers can get outraged, the rest of us can recall that plenty of Presidents were photographed in the Oval Office without suit jackets.

But I thought it had a lot of good insight into the first few days in the Obama White House and that sets the tone going forward.

More likely it was about Shrub getting the toppings that he wanted on his pizza. What an asshat and I am glad to see him gone. He did not deserve to even step foot into Washington,DC. Look at him with his feet on the table. I am glad this ass is gone!!!

14. I like this quote
“He looked around,” said one of his guests, retired Rear Adm. John D. Hutson, “and said, ‘I’ve got to do something about these plates. I’m not really a plates kind of guy.’ ”

I think this quote is especially funny, given his own face debuted on plates the moment the election was called.

25. Sans jacket isn't "business casual," it's sans jacket
However, I think it's a good start. I think all businesses should be true business casual. Studies have proven people are more productive and moral is better when people can dress casually.

27. Somehow, I don't think Obama cares if...
you're wearing a Hawaiian shirt, baggy shorts and flip-flops, as long as you get your goddamn job done correctly. Do the job, correctly, make our nation and it's people better, and who really gives a shit WHAT you're wearing? A suit don't mean shit. Supposedly Kennedy killed the hat industry by refusing to wear one for his inauguration, and just maybe Obama will kill the three piece suit.

31. Maybe this is one of the reasons the bush administration was fucked up-
“I’ll never forget going to work on a Saturday morning, getting called down to the Oval Office because there was something he was mad about,” said Dan Bartlett, who was counselor to Mr. Bush. “I had on khakis and a buttoned-down shirt, and I had to stand by the door and get chewed out for about 15 minutes. He wouldn’t even let me cross the threshold.”

It's clear the way things looked was far more important than the way things actually were.

32. Dan Bartlett Tells NY Times that W was a Petty Tyrant
The story talks of how Obama has a business casual dress code for those doing weekend work at the White House. Barlett then offers his recollection from the bygone era of the neocons-

"I’ll never forget going to work on a Saturday morning, getting called down to the Oval Office because there was something he was mad about," said Dan Bartlett, who was counselor to Mr. Bush. "I had on khakis and a buttoned-down shirt, and I had to stand by the door and get chewed out for about 15 minutes. He wouldn’t even let me cross the threshold."

Really? You find it amusing that as a very high-level attorney you got yelled at by Shrub for not having on a tie? And W would not even allow Bartlett into the room to be yelled at? Pathetic. It sounds to me as though the Bushies confused "President" with "King". What is accomplished by that sort of immature nonsense. Is Bartlett a professional or a 12-year old?

35. Gibbs, the "look here" guy on Nbc's Today show this morning
had no reason to have his feet on the desk today, esp if he is to be judged on his performance there. He came across as a total nerd, and he really wasn't prepared to present alternate wordings and perspectives on Administrative positions.

I give him a C-, even for might would have been his first day.
