Obama To Host White House "Happy Hour" For Lawmakers Voting On Stimulus Bill

According to The NY Post, President Obama is greasing the voting process a bit with some libations at the White House for lawmakers who are considering his stimulus bill.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has invited Republican and Democratic lawmakers for drinks at the White House as they consider his economic recovery bill that still faces opposition.

White House aides say about two dozen key members of Congress were invited to the Executive Mansion Wednesday evening. The guest list includes six House Democrats, six House Republicans and five senators from each party.

Actually quite interesting. I remember reading in The Audacity of Hope about how President Obama, back in the days when he was an Illinois Senator, would go to a steakhouse with fellow Republican and Democratic Senators and settle out details of legislation over steak and beers.

That's my President. B-)

2. I think that is how LBJ back when he was a Senator
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 05:36 PM by RamboLiberal
got things done. Wonder if Tweety will talk about. I seem to remember him lamenting a few times that things are so partisan since the nineties that congress critters don't get together and share a few toddies.

3. Will Obama twist a few Rethug arms or will he have a cup of tea with them?
If he twists their arms, then that would be like LBJ.

5. Blame Newt Gingrich and George W. Bush.
They eliminated all the comity in Congress, and poisoned the atmosphere in Washington with demonization, winner-take-all politics, and mean-spiritedness.

Now both parties are waging a cold-war with each other, refuse to associate with each other, and use politics as a means to attack the other party, rather than as a means to get things done for the country.

That's what Obama wrote about in Audacity of Hope, and what he intends to change with events like this.

9. Think Obama could set up a weekly poker night at the White House?
There's another thing he did back in Illinois that could be used to get Dems and Repubs to socialize with each other.
