Jill Biden has a new job
By RACHEL KIPP • The News Journal • January 27, 2009

After a whirlwind week that included husband Joe’s swearing in as vice president, a move from Wilmington to Washington, and a much buzzed-about appearance on Oprah, the veteran teacher started a new position today as an adjunct professor at Northern Virginia Community College.

Biden is teaching two English classes this semester at the school, the second largest community college in the country with six campuses and more than 60,000 students.

“I love the community college feel, and I feel that this is my forte,” Biden said today after teaching her first classes at the school’s Alexandria campus. “I’m a community college educator. My students are my heroes because they’re working, they’re going to school, they’re raising families and trying hard to get ahead in life.”

Today was Biden’s first day at a new school in more than a decade. She spent more than half of her 28-year career teaching English composition at Delaware Technical & Community College. Biden taught a full load of courses four days a week at Delaware Tech this fall and spent weekends campaigning for her husband and President Barack Obama.

1. Glad she found another teaching position
The fact that she is still sticking with a community college is great, lots of need for good teachers at those type of colleges.

2. Could you imagine having Dr. Biden as your professor - that would be so cool
The students would probably bug her if she could get Joe or Barack to come visit the class for the day.

4. Yeah, that would be really cool. I go to a community college right now
as I am getting my CDA to teach preschool. I can't imagine Secret Service men at my school but I imagine they must try to blend in as much as possible.

7. Probably a few posing as students
With one posted in an obvious place, like by the door or something. That'd be my guess at least.

9. Maybe even actually students
I can see assigning a few agents who want to upgrade their education to her class. That would help them blend in even better with the student body. They could turn in assignments and participate in discussions and get to know the other students well enough to assess them.

Do you know that this is the first First or Second Lady who has actually worked at a regular position outside the home during their husband's tenure as P or VP? I remember causes, entertaining, even speeches. However, the tradition was that it was unpaid work without a set schedule.

11. I could see that, although I'm not sure how likely it would be
It would make sense for any agent posing as a student to hand in coursework and participate in study groups and whatnot to keep up their cover, but going too much into that role could cause their attention to slip. And from what I understand, Secret Service Agents tend to be very well educated as it is.

Yeah, I love that Jill Biden is actually working, and that she's the first Second Lady to hold a regular job during their husband's tenure. It's another historic first that's being understandably but sadly overlooked. It's even cooler that she's an English teacher!

21. I think it's a great sign!
I don't see why women (or men) married to heads of state should have to end their careers if they don't conflict with any state issues!

3. Darn! I was hoping that she'd be at the community college in my area...
Montgomery Community College in Takoma Park...right on the RED LINE and only about 10 minutes from her husband's office.

13. That's very cool, but isn't security an issue?
What I mean is do the students who register for her classes have to undergo a background/security check or something?

15. I'm 35 years younger than her and I find her stunning. I know, that's kinda weird to say about
Joe Biden's wife, but I find her very charming.

18. there was a funny story about one of her students last fall asking about the strange men in class
asking why they were showing up to class, and Jill just told the student, "I don't know!"

She liked having her students not know about her husband :)

20. NOVA is GOOD, it's a branch of University of Virginia
the public Ivy. (ahhhh, sigh UVA - my alma mater) :hi:

Many people from northern Virginia go to NOVA first to get into UVA. Jill will love it there. They are damned lucky to have her!!
