Republicans don't want to fix the economy. They want it to get worse under Obama.
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 09:25 PM by sparosnare
I know Obama is working for a bipartisan stimulus package but I certainly hope he isn't fooled into thinking Republicans will act in the best interest of the country. The existence of their party, of their ideology, depends on Obama's failure. They will smile and shake his hand then stab him in the back.

I keep thinking about Obama's words during his inauguration speech:

"you will be judged by what you build, not by what you destroy".

Those words are just as valid when directed at the Republican Party. All they have done, every time they've had the majority, is tear things apart. It is what they do best. We almost didn't survive 8 years of destruction under Bush. And we cannot ever forget that Karl Rove's mission in life was (and probably still is) to have a permanent one-party Republican rule.

So while I'd like to think these people understand the grave economic circumstances and for once will put politics aside and do the right thing, I don't think they will and I don't think Obama can change their way of thinking.

Eventually, Obama will need to do what's best no matter how much they kick and scream. At least he can say he tried.

1. With out a doubt they will do everything in their power to see that he fails.
If he turns around this mess the Pukes will be out of power for at least 20 years.

14. On the other hand
if he is not perceived to have at least gotten us on the road to out of the mess, we will not have another progressive Northern Democratic candidate for the next 48 years. The last one was Kennedy.

At this point, the country-clubber Repukes are scared. But if things do start to lift up, they really don't care that much who's in power as long as they can make a buck. They really don't have much in common with the fundie Repukes, that was a shotgun marriage forged by Ronnie Raygun. Right now, they're in a trial separation, the trick will be to make that a permanent divorce.

16. The CountryClub econo repubs
seem to be the ones that are saying they'll give Obama a chance. I've actually had a couple of them blurt that out to me in the last two months. It felt like they had found the most absolutely left-core person that they knew to confess that to.

Go and sin no more, comrades.

19. Because they aren't ignorant
They are losing money too, they see their net worth shrinking, they aren't hung up on gay marriage or abortion. It is the bitter ones that are the problem.

2. Republicans aren't interested in the economy no matter who is President.
If they wanted to fix it, they would have done it under Bush.

They don't care.

8. True. They're the reason we're in this mess.
They're the reason Obama has to fix it - and if they don't want to help, oh well.

26. The problem is that they are already controlling the media narrative.
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 07:57 AM by Liberal_Stalwart71
That Obama has 8 or 9 months to clean up the mess or he's a failure. I heard this on "This Week" from one of them. None of the so-called Democrats on the panel corrected that assertion. It took years to fuck up the economy but they want Obama to clean it up in less than a year??!?!?!?

17. No, they're saboteur's
The GOP has become the party of saboteurs. They plan to sabotage everything in the US government they possibly can in the next 2 to 4 years so that they can blame it on democrats.

What the nation needs right now is real leaders who will seriously discuss how to fix our nations problems, not a bunch of saboteurs trying to make sure everything will fall apart even more when we try to fix things.

6. Fooled? Obama? Not Likely
This is a man who became a Senator, in Illinois, then beat HRC for the Democratic nomination, and then beat Maverick and Caribou Barbie to the Presidency.

The pugs won't see what's coming till they have the thread marks on their foreheads.

9. The fact that it will likely
get worse still and that recovery may be several years away gives them hope. If they can delay recovery for just a little while they may win an election and another chance to finish destroying the country.

10. The Dems pushed thru the 700 billion banking bailout with no accountability to the people
I do not believe the stimulus plan is going to be for the people either.

We supposedly have immediate problems --they are not addressing the immediate problems--they are focused on saving the rich and the politicians.

We are going to end up like Argentina with the International Monetary Fund calling the shots---Geithner, the tax cheat, has IMF experience.

11. He won't get them all
But he will get some of them, and I think that's the whole idea. Those who vote against his plans to help the economy will do so at their own risk. If they vote "against" help, they will have to face the voters in 2010, and if the plan worked, it will be used against them in the elections. I think Obama knows what he is doing, and I don't think he will let them walk all over him, but he will give them enough rope to hang themselves. How can they argue when they voted against a plan to give the voters "tax relief"? How can the argue when they voted "against" a plan to put voters back to work? How can they argue when the voted "against" a plan that had the basics that this country needed to get out of the mess that a "republican" president put us in?

Obama may not bring all the republicans in congress over to his side, but he will gain more republican voters to his view come election time, and he will independents, and many republicans voting for the candidates that did try and help out the people, and voting out the guys that voted "against" the help the country needed!

I guess a few is all to expect; the rest will be left behind wondering how to explain not supporting Obama to voters.

He is giving the republicans enough rope to hang themselves.

There are enough republicans that will join our side, if they want to keep their jobs.

24. Rec. This is exactly what my wife and I
were talking about when I found your thread. You are exactly correct. Just like Limbaugh, the Republicans want Obama to fail. If Obama is successful Republican approval will slip even more. This will be their focus for four years, doing everything they can to cause mischief for Obama.

28. I felt that the Obama quote about being judged by what you build
was aimed at the GOP obstructionists.
I think they will attempt to sabotage Obamas efforts at economic recovery, and will fail, leading to even further collapse of the Publican Party. The divide is pretty evident now - the Country Club center Publicans and the Snake Handler Right-religious Publicans are becoming two separate groups and I believe they will split into 2 or more actual parties, with the very rightists running Palin/Huckabee for the next election.
