Hillary to Cornyn: "The Clintons don't forget."
On Tuesday, Politico's Glenn Thrush reported about a little tête-à-tête between Hillary Clinton and John Cornyn in the Capitol. Cornyn, you'll recall, had just prevented a unanimous consent vote on Hillary's nomination and Thrush, who saw but did not hear the discussion, characterized the exchange as "heated," which Cornyn denied.

Well, one of our eagle-eyed sources spotted the same discussion and was able to get within earshot just in time to hear Clinton warn Cornyn, "The Clintons don't forget." One day later, Cornyn's objections to Clinton's confirmation magically disappeared and the man who had set the roll call vote in motion voted in favor of confirming Clinton. Now let's see how she handles Hamid Karzai.

7. The Roosevelts remembered how Hoover had FDR and ER stand, that's STAND...
for an hour because Hoover was 45 minutes late to a White House reception for governors in April of '32. On this occasion it was up to Eleanor to hold him up - no mean feat as he was not only heavy, but top-heavy and could leave bruises in the arm of whoever was holding him up. By the end of the evening the R's looked like NBA players at the foul line. Just bathed in sweat. It angered and carbonated their desire to oust Hoover, whom they'd liked up to that point.

In other words, politics ain't beanbag, and it is personal

Here's a photo of the evening:

was uncomfortable on a train going over 35 mph. He didn't have the right back muscles to hold himself steady for any extended period of time on a fast train.

It came in very handy his wife was so big. If she'd been shorter or smaller, she might not have been able to do it.

Greenwald Skins Politico
By Big Tent Democrat, Section Media

This is a tour de force evisceraton of Politico by Glenn Greenwald, exposing lies, conceit, stupidity, hypocrisy and incompetence, all in one column. Read the whole thing. But, I want to take the main Politico players Glenn skins:

(1) (non-Pajama) Roger Simon - Glenn proves him untruthful, hypocritical, and rather stupid. Here's how - Simon wrote about John Edwards' haircut. Now we all expect that from people like Roger Simon because he is shallow fool. But Riger Simon has gotten wind that we think of him as a shallow fool and thus wanted to provide a justification for his vapidity. And thus he describes why he is wrting about Edwards' haircut again:

This is bad: When you go to Google and enter "Edwards haircut," the first item that comes up is a story by Bill Wundram in The Quad-City Times of Davenport, Iowa. . . . The article got 324 comments from readers. When people inside the Beltway are talking about your haircut, it doesn't matter much. When people in Iowa are talking about your haircut, you may have a problem.

Simon's first mistake was to think that Glenn Greenwald did not know that he lifted the item from Matt Drudge, not that he actually did a Google search, and that since Drudge linked to the Iowa newspaper story, that explains the 324 comments. So, Simon is demonstrated to be not truthful about (1) why he is writing the story, the Iowa newspaper piece had nothing to do with it, and (2)the enormous amounts of comments the piece got - both because Drudge linked to the Iowa article.

So what do we know now about Roger Simon in addition to the fact that he seems vapid and foolish (which we knew already)? That he does not tell the truth either.

(2) John Harris, Managing Editor of Politico. What do we make of the high and mighty decrier of The Freak Show that is the Media now? Greenwald says it best:

The Politico's own Editor-in-Chief, John Harris, wrote in his book that political journalism is a "Freak Show" ruled by Matt Drudge, which makes it, by definition, a Freak Show devoted to advancing the Limbaugh-led right-wing agenda. More than any other journalistic outlet around, The Politico has conducted itself so as to feed off of the core of that right-wing Freak Show.

This is what Harris wrote when explaining to me in the most generously patient way the difference between the elevated work of political journalists and the rambunctious, lowly partisanship of bloggers:

Although we are a new publication, Politico has several reporters and editors who have been in this profession for two decades or more. They know that what counts is reputation over the long haul, not any individual story or any uproar du jour on the blogs. . . . In your case, much of your criticism comes from a distinct ideological perspective. That's fine, but surely you must appreciate that not everyone acts with your degree of ideological motivation. In the case of people at Politico, our motivations are simple -- to write interesting and worthwhile stories and to put those stories before largest possible audience.

That pious lecture was delivered by an individual who oversees a "newspaper" that has published no fewer than eight items in the last two weeks about John Edwards' haircut, including a front-page-promoted article yesterday devoted exclusively to that matter by his "Senior Political Columnist."

John Harris looks a gasbag here and I wonder if he has the gumption to respond to Greenwald's evisceration of Politico. Because Roger Simon really stepped in it on this one.

All the defenses, all the whining, all the nonsense has been exposed in this little episode. And if John Harris wants to be better than he was before, better than what he described in the Freak Show, what Roger Simon did must be reprimanded and must be stopped.

4. This is why the RWNM has never beaten them
And it's also probably why the RWNM hates them so much: after destroying McGovern, Carter, Mondale and Dukakis, they were finally confronted with an opponent who knew how to fight and win.

I remember in 1993, after Dick Shelby of Alabama denounced Bill Clinton's budget and tax package on TV, the Clinton Administration quietly moved a NASA facility out of Hunstville, AL and in to Texas.

140. How long? Are they completely dead yet?
I would be willing to bet that a higher percent of people believe that the Clintons did trash the White House than believe that Kerry did not earn his medals. This is spite of the Clintons having far greater media access and prominence.

The fact that there is a word "swiftboating" and it means particularly unsavory lying for political purposes. There is no similar word developed for the Clintons - that embeds the concept that they were lied about.

Here, I hope this is not true. The fact is that Cornyn did nothing other than insure there was debate and a vote. There is nothing wrong about that. (Turn it around and what your feeling would have been had a Democrat done the same thing - one likely did for Dr Rice as there was a vote on her - with 13 voting against her.) Also consider how the Democrats used there time in the debate - Kerry let several REPUBLICANS and Democrats speak praising HRC. A few Republicans spoke on their time and even then DeMint spoke of his intent to vote against her but praised her competence. Go to CSPAN video archive and you can watch that time period - it was NOT painful.

The Clintons are famous for their political vendetta's, and having Hillary wasting her time and energy on them at this crucial juncture is not appropriate. She simply could have let him go on his merry way and vote how he wished, after all, it wasn't like she wasn't a shoe in no matter what.

Now she's done this call-out and it's shit like this that leads to petty political games paralyzing our government. There are times to bring down the hammer and there are times to let sleeping dogs lie. This was one of those sleeping dog times and Hillary fucked up.

99. That wasn't the gist of your previous snark though.
You claimed that "progressives" want someone to fight for them but can't stomach it when they get one. I pointed out that it's not just a question of getting someone who can fight, but what that person fights for that matters. If this story were true (and I don't believe it is), this would be a case of fighting for petty personal feelings, not fighting to make our lives better. There's a huge distinction there, as I'm sure you know.

You were just trying to score points against those "progressives" you seem to hate so much. The funny part being that you're no different from them in any real way. Just a different slice of the same Democratic pie, convinced they taste better than the other slices.

No I didn't. I said "progressives" want a fighter then can't stomach it when they get one. Big difference. ou won't find an elected official who will fight just for "progressives." Unfortunately, "progressives" whine about that, too.

I pointed out that it's not just a question of getting someone who can fight, but what that person fights for that matters.

Yes you did - and now that she's confirmed, Secretary of State will fight for Obama's foreign policy. Most would agree that matters.

If this story were true (and I don't believe it is), this would be a case of fighting for petty personal feelings, not fighting to make our lives better. There's a huge distinction there, as I'm sure you know.

No, it would be a case of fighting against someone who could lead a movement against her confirmation.

You were just trying to score points against those "progressives" you seem to hate so much.

Nah, they do that themselves everyday.

Only thing some progressives are more afraid of than the repugs are democrats who fight, and are winners. Look at the inane shit Obama was put through before he had the power to make one decision as president from our own side. Look what the only other winner we've had in years went through, from our own side. Reid and Pelosi head the dance troupe. especially when Hillary was in the senate from 2001-2007 and especially when Bill used his three week summer 2004 book tour to support and DEFEND Bush's decisions on terrorism and Iraq war.

It's obvious which one the Obamas are, which they have amply shown time and again.
You can be tough without acting like a thug. Just ask Team O. I hope Hillary shows
more graciousness and diplomacy as Obama's SoS. There are enough vengeful thugs
in the Middle East, the world doesn't need one more pretending to be America's top
diplomat.

72. Being cooperative has not worked with Reeps
...so fuck it, let's let Hillary slip her leash a bit now and then, to remind them that we are being classy because we CHOOSE to be, not because we have to be.

We keep on acting like the Reeps will respond to civil treatment by responding in kind. They haven't, they don't and they won't. Reeps have acted like pillaging Saxons since 1983, and they know no other way to behave. So a sharp slap now and again is necessary to gain their respect - or at least their attention.

Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 02:55 PM by ClarkUSA
There's a middle ground called being a class act while still being persuasive and tough. Political thuggery is ugly no matter who
does it and Americans are tired of politicians who practice it, which is a huge reason why Barack Obama won by the largest popular
vote margin since LBJ and has higher approval ratings than any president in recent memory. Hillary better get over her Clintonian
bullying ways (I won't hold my breath on that score) because it doesn't reflect well on either the Obama administration or lend
much credence on her alleged skills as a diplomat.

It's time to leave politically divisive thuggery behind us. We had enough of that during the Clinton and Bush II administrations
and look where it's gotten us as a nation? It's time to turn the page. I don't see anything statesmanlike about Hillary's behavior.

81. Why be statesmanlike to Cornyn? He's a thug and understands only thuggery.
One of the first lessons I had to learn was to speak in ways that my audience understood (not quite to the extent of the fictional Wilfred Coker, but in that vein). If I am speaking to reasonable people, I deliver my message one way (e.g."if we are to succeed, we must work cooperatively"). If I am dealing with thuggish people, I deliver the message with different tone and phrasing (for example, "play ball with us or we will shove the bat up your ass"). I think Hillary is doing the same.

Of course, if she goes all Vito Corleone on a foreign head of state or someone of that ilk, I'll share in your concern. For now, I trust Obama to keep his people in line.

Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 03:49 PM by ClarkUSA
I'll bet many of you would have been appalled if he dissed both McCain and Hillary, despite having very good reason
to do so after how he was thuggishly treated by both these opponents. However, I've come to believe that President
Obama believes in co-opting your enemies/opponents into following his lead instead of alienating them further by
getting down to their level. Two wrongs don't make a right and that applies to Clintonian thuggery, however successful
this time.

Tom DeLay was successful much in the same way during his heyday and freepers cheered him on. I don't believe in
disparaging GOP Rovian thuggery and cheering on Hillary's. If I did, I'd be an obvious partisan hypocrite, wouldn't I?

Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 07:23 PM by ClarkUSA
"Head of state is the generic term for the individual or collective office that serves as the chief public representative of a
monarchic or republican nation-state, federation, commonwealth or any other political state. His or her role generally
includes personifying the continuity and legitimacy of the state and exercising the political powers, functions and duties
granted to the head of state in the country's constitution and further legislation. The head of state is often thought of as
the official "leader" of the nation-state."

And before you go spouting off on "stalking" or "DU rules" just remember what you did in the post right above that you responded to.

Anyway, Cheers! So happy that Chris Matthews decided to resign his multi million dollar contract with military contractors in order to pay that mortgage on that nice Marta's Vinarge home rather than muck up our new found Dem majority.

139. True...............
IT (and there are many "ITs" on both the LW and RW blogs) always needs to be fed with a daily dose of Clinton hatred. One thing that surprised me initially during the long campaign was the similarity in the attacks that came from the left and the right, they were mirrors of each other. Ironically, Obama and Clinton were a hair away from each other on most policy issues and still are. If anything, Obama has co-opted quite a few of Hillary's proposals particualrly in the foreign policy and health care area.

134. the one her ex law partners tried to "buy" Patterson out with perhaps?
At the very end of the article:

"Her former law firm, Boies, Schiller & Flexner, has been the largest single donor to her House campaigns, and David Boies, the senior partner at the firm, contributed $25,000 to Paterson's campaign committee on December 23, 2008, while the governor was considering Gillibrand's candidacy. Boies' son Chris, also a partner in the firm, contributed another $25,000 on the same day."

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2009/01/the_new_frontru.php

And the new york state docs that verify it:

http://www.elections.state.ny.us:8080/reports/rwservlet?cmdkey=efs_sch_report+p_filer_id=A37719+p_e_year=2009+p_freport_id=J+p_transaction_code=A

If not illegal, sure reeks of the same kind of "pay to play" we're railing Blago for. Seems a bit hypocritical, at best. Especially given these contributions were made shortly after Kennedy announced her interest in the seat.

That doesn't bother anyone? Bothers me....

UPDATE: A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee emailed Madam Secretary with this:

This story about what Sen. Clinton allegedly told Sen. Cornyn is false and it’s disappointing that the Senator’s office was not contacted before it was posted. Senator Cornyn has made clear, including in an op-ed in the Austin American Statesman today, that this situation had nothing to do with Senator Clinton personally, and everything to do with his long record as an advocate for transparency in government.

So much for the "thuggish" remarks. That's to say, other than the ones made here by some.........

No. She's a politician and this is a political discussion board. If you act like the enemy, you will be perceived as the enemy. And as long as you continue to try to white-wash history, you will be corrected.

265. Goes along with what I've heard since early 90s - Clinton wing of party vs Kennedy wing
and it keeps getting worse, apparently. I'll never forget how Bill Clinton as a Dem PRESIDENT did not want to endorse Kerry for his senate race - he WANTED to endorse the Republican candidate William Weld, who was also a legal fixer for Poppy Bush on BCCI matters.

Clinton wrote in his book that he decided to endorse Kerry for his TECHNOLOGY expertise. What a crock. Not one word that Kerry was the top senator on terrorism issues and government corruption issues. And that book came out in 2004 several months AFTER it was known that Kerry was the nominee. You would never know it by the book Clinton wrote - William Weld received several pages of glowing acknowledgements, while Kerry never received ONE SENTENCE of acknowledgement for his years of work for Democrats and our nation.

I used to be just like you (to my total disgust) defending every horrible thing they've ever done, and they've done plenty of horrible things. If this election cycle didn't open up your eyes about them, there is no hope for you. That is evident from the crossposts here and elsewhere, still visible on the internets btw.

No worries, there's always 2012. Or 2016. Or whatever.

campaigning for Pres. Obama all over the country and giving a passionate speech at the convention. Apparently, you were still stuck in the primaries. All your post proves is that you can't stand the idea that some of us like and defend the Clintons. Get over it. Also, there's no way Hillary would challenge a sitting Democratic President, so you can rule out 2012. Finally, 2016 is too far away to even be contemplating who'd be running. But I doubt Hillary will be running in 2016 taking her age into account.

178. Really? I saw her total lack of graciousness, her race-baiting, her
reneging on the disposition of Florida and Michigan, her playing the victim card on and embracing Faux News, only dropping out after she ran out of states to compete in, trashing Obama nonstop for three months after she had lost any hope of victory. Just cuz.

Her spectacularly poorly run campaign is etched in history and will be remembered for what it really was, not the white-washed version you entertain in your head.

Obama has neutralized her in his magnanimous act of grace in giving her the SoS position, to keep her pissing out of the tent instead of in, not because she deserves it (she doesn't) nor is she qualified (Tuzla! Ireland Peace Process!), but because he believes in keeping his friends close and his enemies closer successfully burying her in Foggy Bottom.

And the scheming and plotting by the Clinton First fanclub remains visible on the internets, as disrespectful toward Barack as always and punctuated by a nasty undertone of racism.

That's what you are defending. What a legacy!

Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 10:24 PM by AtomicKitten
of what transpired this election is just the tip of the iceberg. For instance, you clearly have no clue that history will remember that the first black Democratic president's primary opponent race-baited and worse. You also don't seem to understand that that is painfully offensive to many Democrats.

The Clintons are not nice people. They were less than helpful to John Kerry in 2004. They threw childish hissyfits when people gravitated to and endorsed Barack, in no small measure due to their appalling behavior in the primary. They were part of the smear campaign against Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of a slain president.

Yet many of you remain in denial. Or least pretend to, because coincidentally today I got an email with some pretty awful shit on this subject; the disrespect continues for our president from people that still crosspost here (no worries, haters, I would be rightfully bounced if I named names).

Suffice to say, this whole ugly mess got on my last nerve today, and one of the schisms on these boards is understanding why. Moving on is in progress, but every once in a while the denial of the truth is just too tough to swallow silently.

What you see as race baiting some of us see as a candidate playing the race card against a former president who was up to that point beloved in the AA community while being aided and abetted by the media who hoisted their candidate of choice over their shoulders without much vetting.

Look, we can rehash the primaries for the next 4 years but what's the point?

God, I feel like I'm back in the primaries, and I am soooo past that now. Obama is President, Hillary is SOS and I'm content with what he has done so far. The Clintons have provided plenty of material to hate, and that is entirely their fault. The fact that some of you are fine with the race-baiting they did speaks to a lack of character and explains why people like you glom onto people like the Clintons.

201. I like how this has turned into a Clinton attack thread. Cornyn deserved it.
Plus how can anyone verify this is true?

The GOP (NRSC) is denying it.

202. And you can bet if it was true, they'd be using it to their advantage. Like I said upthread, we're
supposed to believe that this "source" only heard that line and nothing else before or after it? How about some context? Surely, this "source" wasn't lucky enough to overhear the conversation just while that line was uttered.

221. Wasn't the source from Politico? How reliable, huh?
Some people here want to attack the Clintons no matter the source.

Plus even if it were true, and I don't know if it is, I can't say that Cornyn didn't deserve that treatment.

214. I don't doubt she had choice words, but I don't believe that our SOS talks like a mobster.
It's politico so I'll take it with a grain of made up salt.

I'm sure they mean Republican sources rather than "eagle-eyed".

Please tell me Hillary doesn't talk like a Blagojevich.

216. Politico is just trying to make trouble.
Read the article, they updated it. Cornyn's office denies Politico's coverage is accurate. Hillary would not threaten a fellow senator, let alone talk about herself and Bill in third person. It's all B.S.

219. I think everybody on his side oughta get this kind of smackdown.
They also need to be reminded (since they evidently didn't learn the lesson of last November) that VOTERS DON'T FORGET, EITHER. Elections have consequences, cornyn. So pick up your bookbag and your lunchbox and go to the back of the room, sit down over there in the corner, AND SHUT THE FUCK UP.

225. Hey I posted this because I like Hillary.
Who knows if it was true but Cornyn and other Rethugs will not be able to walk all over her. She is a tough lady. She has left the rivalry with Barack Obama behind and we should too. I did not vote for her in the primaries but I am happy she is our SoS, she will do a great job in my opinion.

227. Agreed!! The source is questionable (Politico) but even if true, Cornyn deserved it.
Those attacking Hillary on this thread, it must mean you're defending Cornyn.

And believing questionable sources like Politico.

Double negative.

Good thing President Obama and Secretary Clinton are both class acts!

267. Smackdown!
Hillary is great at the smackdown, and one liners too! I actually came here to see if I could find any Hillary supporters and invite them to a really cool forum that I belong to. We also welcome Obama supporters, we are NOT however a debate forum! We figured there were enough of those on the web and we needed someplace to discuss politics in a rational nature. We have less than nothing to offer to conservatives! As a matter of fact, I was banned yesterday at A HILLARY FORUM, for nailing Sarah Palin on her horrific policies and hatred of animals. Her latest effort to eradicate Beluga whales is pretty much the last straw for me!! How some of these supposed Hillary supporters can jump on the conservative bandwagon is beyond me! So, if it sounds like you would be interested in a place to discuss the SoS activities and news, come on by and check us out! We'd love to have some new peeps to converse with, just keep in mind, we are NOT a debate forum, just informational and fun!

271. It's a great story, but I think it might be just a story.
"Sources say" type stuff. There's an update to the original assertion offered by Cornyn's people, that reads as follows:

This story about what Sen. Clinton allegedly told Sen. Cornyn is false and it’s disappointing that the Senator’s office was not contacted before it was posted. Senator Cornyn has made clear, including in an op-ed in the Austin American Statesman today, that this situation had nothing to do with Senator Clinton personally, and everything to do with his long record as an advocate for transparency in government.

I'd love it to be true, but I don't think it is. Probably someone saw them discussing the matter, and they filled in the blanks. Clinton's been around long enough to not be blabbing when there are strangers within earshot.
