2. Is this in reference to Hillary's very strong statements of late?
I have been a bit of a Hillary hater, I admit it; over her DLCness, mainly. But this - THIS I am excited about. This is non-negotiable. :applause:

4. that happened automatically when I was born, actually...
I don't think anyone declared anything, or that someone else's declaration validated me as human... unless you're talking about "It's a girl!" But I don't know exactly what was said, if that. I was suffocating so I don't know if they were thinking about my gender until I could breathe. : )

What do you mean? What did I miss? : )

6. Not quite.
Rick Warren.
All inaugural preachers were men.
All folks announcing and analyzing the Academy Award nominations were men.
14% of the op-eds in my local paper - the "liberal" Washington Post are written by men.
I'm not aware of a woman with her finger on the nuclear button.
Our country doesn't trust a woman to host a game show.
Our country doesn't trust a woman to do be the spokesman for financial firms.

No, but I think the new administration is on the right track.

11. Yes, that's true.
Does anyone still watch it? I know it was wildly successful for a while.

I cancelled my cable a while ago and get really bad reception on the airwaves - so bad I can't tune my digital signal.

I also should point out that a lot of this stuff is market-based. If folks don't pay to see the WNBA like they do the NBA, that's just the way it is.

15. It's ratings aren't quite what it used to be
But it still enjoys relative popularity, and from what I've been able to determine, is no where near having to worry about cancellation.

I agree, though, on the other aspects of your initial post. The game show one is probably the one to be least concerned about. I just thought I'd point the fact out. :hi:

19. It's about controlling the conversation. Like late night talk shows...
but I actually kinda like MV. I think CBS should have chosen her over KC.

These are heady days, aren't they? It's ALL good!

10. OF Course. Guess you can't appreciate the beginnings of change, until Obama waves his magic wand
and removes the gap between where those issues are and what he can do about them...

Yep guess he'll have to take control of the Entertainment Industrial Complex and give em their new orders.

if you have any input into those issues you mentioned that do need change..... you should get busy!!*no snarky vocal inflection intended. I am serious.* If I was a writer, I'd write ass kicking stories for the screen about women.....

22. ahh, that's awesome!!!
yes, alot of the problem is deep enculturation. that can only change over time, with alot of PEOPLE consciously seeing the habits and then doing the opposite of what's "expected"...

geee, I just got a blast from the past memory!...in High School, I was the school newspaper cartoonist for a couple years. And I remember how when I was drawing any "your average person" character, I would consciously make myself change my first impulse. I mean, my automatic action would be to draw a male because that's just what everyone does; so I would purposely make myself change my mental picture to a female character! Yep, I did that even those many years ago!

21. If it helps, Obama chose a female minister to do the inaugural prayer service (a first)
The main reason I remember was because she told a NA story I've always liked as part of her sermon. :)

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/11/ap/preswho/main4713136.shtml?source=RSS&attr=_4713136
The Rev. Sharon Watkins, pastor of a Protestant denomination with about 700,000 members in the United States and Canada, will deliver the sermon at the National Prayer Service that caps the inauguration activities of Barack Obama.

Watkins will be the first woman to give the sermon at the traditional event, to be held Jan. 21 at the National Cathedral in Washington.

In a statement from the Presidential Inaugural Committee, Watkins called her selection an honor. "I hope that my message will call us to believe in something bigger than ourselves and remind us to reach out to all of our neighbors to build communities of possibility," she said.

We do have a way to go yet towards true equality but I truly feel that we now have a President who will work towards the day when ALL Americans will be treated equally and with dignity. :)

9. Are you refering to President Obama's statement on Roe V Wade Anniversary?
"Statement of President Obama on the 36th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women's health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman's right to choose.

While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere."

I took this from babylonsister's thread:

the global gag:

"“In one of his first acts as president, Barack Obama is planning to lift a rule” that bars federal money from going to international family planning groups that counsel women on abortion or perform the procedure. The so-called “global gag rule” (also referred to as the “Mexico City policy”) was created by the Reagan administration, then overturned by President Clinton, and was later re-instituted by President Bush as his first act in office." -- think progress

As an aside, it doesn't matter in Hollywood what women write- the men are in charge and they don't think that women can "open" a movie by themselves....logic is irrelevant; they are convinced. hence, screenplays about women are scorned unless there is the whiff of Oscar material (awards- Alpha Male tokens!!!).

I know plenty of extremely talented female writers who finally manage to get their scripts in front of people who can say yes -- only to have some frat boy tell them that if the woman was MORE like a man, and there were car chases and guns, the movie would have "legs".

Not to discourage women from writing, but rather to put the responsibility for these things not being produced as often as they should be where it belongs -- on the patriarchal society of Hollywood (which is a corporate whore world at the upper levels). the problem, in other words, is not a lack of women trying.

24. I sure hope you don't think I'm implying that women don't try!!!!
I am SO fully aware of how women's efforts, in all walks of life, are discounted. Believe me! I'm sick of it, too. Tired of fighting battles I shouldn't have to fight!

It will take time, especially because of the deeply complex interconnections between men and women. Plus, it's always been easy to make smaller, physically weaker people do what you want. Historically, people who threaten to fight back and can back that up with force make their cases more quickly.

So even though women's improvements come slowly, I think the energy is shifting.

26. No, I didn't think you were saying that:-)
:hi:

sorry if I came off that way. It's always a challenge for me to get my tone right on the internet. I think a lot of people tend to believe that women (insert minority group here) don't try hard enough (witness Palin's stupid interview cutting Hilary down for citing media unfairness), so I took the opportunity to share my thoughts. I might be a bit edgy about it;-)

I love your ideas and boy, I'm sick of it, too. I'm sure we could talk for hours about our frustrating experiences...ha ha.

But, I agree that things are changing. Symbols of this change (for me) are Michelle, Jill, Hilary and the Obama girls. Smart women-- tough but feminine and real. Genuine warmth.

One day, Hollywood will wake up to the box office support for female movies. :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi:
