Garth stole it
like it was the end of the month.

I'm just saying. The BEST performer was Garth Brooks. Maybe it was because it was so unexpected. Hell, he had this black southern woman shoutin!!!

Betty Levette did great and looks good and jon tried to keep up. I put the TV on mute for beyonce. If I'm looking for theatrics and drama I go for MJB, sorry sasha.

1. Ha!
Sasha did pretty good though! I was surprised really and proud of her - and I really really don't like her.

And Garth!?? Who knew, right?? Not me. Ha! He was good, so good. I loved when he took his hat off to the Prez and First lady and touched his heart. Great moment.

I thought he stole the show too but then when I watched the second time I think Ol' Mellancamp gave'em a run for his money cuz he took me there too.

18. I think they are talking about Beyonce.
Her alter ego while she is performing is called "Sasha". Plus Beyonce has an album out called "I am... Sasha Fierce".

On topic: I miss Beyonce's part, on purpose. I am tired of seeing her everywhere.

11. I thought it would have been the Boss or Bono
but when Garth came on, I was damnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!

sasha should have sung one of her songs. There were some true singers there (Heather Headley) who would have knocked it out of the ballpark. sasha need to stick with what she knows. She is an ENTERTAiner.

25. right, lol.

Well, she restrained herself well. There were a few moments I thought she might let Sasha take over but she kept it together and in the end I was like "Good job Bey!"

I think for he Inaugaral Ball that Etta should be the one to sing At Last for them though. I mean really, THAT would fit this historic occasion. ah well...

I bet Garth gives one hell of a concert. I've never really listened to him, dn't know much about him, I thought he was just a country singer! But Garth stormed that stage! Good times.

30. And the fastest - at 700 feet per second

That ripple was at the speed of sound, since everyone was locally synchronized (and, yes, they put in a sonic delay for the jumbotrons).

43. You have to, or it turns into sonic mush
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 12:07 AM by jberryhill
That's why tapers at Dead shows who got soundboard feeds needed audio delay units to mix with their mic inputs.

There are a couple of other effects you can see in the broadcast, but the Shout "ripple" wouldn't happen if the jumbotrons weren't slightly delayed.

Another thing you'll notice with some of the orchestral pieces is that there was a significant distance between the vocal performers and the orchestra, which causes some minor synchronization issues depending on whether the vocalist is listening to the orchestra or watching the conductor - it's particularly evident during "You'll Never Walk Alone" - listen carefully and watch her eyes.

6. I liked James Taylor's set.
Shower the people you love with love was fantastic. The melody, harmonies, guitar riffs, and soulfulness against the backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial and the Mall, under a gray sky was just heavenly.

35. James is my all time
favorite and it was a superb performance with his singing posse, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles(Sugarland), and James' "back up singer Arnold McCullers takes it into the stratosphere has always given me chills--"

"North Carolina native James Taylor sang a beautiful version of "Shower the People," backed as usual by Arnold McCullough, and accompanied by John Legend and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles. It was a cloudy day, but JT was wearing sunglasses to hide a nasty injury to his left eye. MTV reported that Taylor had fallen and hit his eye on a doorknob, and that he had been wearing an eyepatch in rehearsals on Saturday."

I loved this set the best. My next favorite was of course U2, then Bettye LaVette/Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Renee Fleming, Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Bruce Springsteen, Josh Groban/Heather Headley, Garth Brooks, John Mellencamp, Seeger/Springsteen, Sheryl Crow/will i am in that order. Overall, I can't complain about a single act. It was all so lovely. I even enjoyed the orchestra!

29. I thought Bon Jovi did amazingly well with that Sam Cook classic
and Betty Levette seemed genuinely "taken with him!" LOL

I agree Garth was very good (and I'm not a country fan, but he's one I'd listen to). For me, the emotional highlight was 90 yo Pete Seeger though with Bruce and his grandson. Singing that Woody Guthrie classic, including ALL the versus, even the controversial ones that say so much to progressives, it was magic.

Loved U2 and John Mellencamp, James Taylor as well. Loved it all, really.

46. "Shout" was the only redeeming aspect of Garth's set.
And it did get the celebration going. However, I think "American Pie" is the worst song ever written. And I was scratching my head over Herbie Hancock ... what was he playing?

My favorites were:

Pete Seeger. I've never before seen Pete so sublimely joyful. It was beautiful.
Beyonce. I've been burned out on Beyonce, but her voice was stunning on "America the Beautiful."
JT. His voice sounds the same as it did 40 years ago, and the song was perfect for the occasion.
U2. I love The Edge and to see U2 do "Pride" on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial was a moment.
Renee Fleming. Even in the cold, her voice was crystalline. That song always makes me tear up.
Challenger and Mr. Lincoln. Now really, that was quite a lead-in for the PEOTUS.
will.i.am. He's just too cool. And, this event couldn't have gone down without some Bob Marley.
