And could that be visible from the Mall? That would be a could be a good condition, for maybe the most participants in a "Moon," in the history of the universe.

1. I don't know exactly when * leaves for Dallas, but it won't be on Air Force 1.
It has been reported that * had his LAST plane ride on AF 1 a few days ago. NO MAS!

And that was it.

Good riddance to both of them.

when its occupant isn't the president.

In fact, there actually are a couple of planes, with different registrations, that go by the name Air Force One when they are transporting the president.

16. I think ANY plane with the President on it is Air Force 1
But yes. I was considering the courtesy farewell flight on the decked out jetliner that usually carries the distinction of being AF1.

24. Any AIR FORCE plane with the POTUS onboard is called "Air Force One".
Marines? Marine One.
Army? Army One.
Commercial flight? Executive One.

If it's the Prez's family (without him), it's "Air Force One Foxtrot" (or the appropriate "XXXX One Foxtrot" name.

The VP? Air Force Two.

The VP's family? Air Force Two Foxtrot.

8. OK...not officially Air Force 1. But I thought it was a "courtesy" thing.
Just like Nixon flew out on what would have been known as Marine 1 on any other day.

And I seem to remember footage of the bush1 plane leaving over DC airspace.

and being schooled on whether it's going to officially be called "air force one".

so, what's the final answer, when will he last be flying in that big shiny plane that was once called or looks very much like air force one?

18. I imagine that right after Obama's inauguration, Bush will take his last flight on that VC-25.
Yes, Bush will fly on that customized 747 one more time immediately after he ceases being President - it's a "courtesy flight" that is traditionally given to the previous president immediately after he leaves office.

But as others have stated, only a plane that is currently carrying the President gets the call sign Air Force One.

19. I don't think it could be designated AF1 for that flight.
You are right...

It would just be the courtesy flight to the curb on the pimped out plane that used to be his.

23. immediately after the swearing in and speech, but before lunch in the Capitol
After President Obama gives his Inaugural Address, he will escort outgoing President George W. Bush to a departure ceremony before attending a luncheon in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. The 56th Inaugural Parade will then make its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House with groups traveling from all over the country to participate.

37. Funny you mention that.....
Ford took the oath of office while Nixon was still in the air. Technically Nixon was still president then.

As a result, the 707, (Okay, VC-137) was Air Force One when it took off. During mid-flight, the minute Ford took the oath, it stopped being Air Force One and became SAM (Special Air Mission) 27000.

This is echoed in the movie "Air Force One" - the minute the MC-130 took the president (Harrison Ford) on board, it changed it's call sign to Air Force One.

If Bush's flight back to Texas leaves before 12:00pm on the 20th, technically it would be Air Force One. The second Obama takes the oath of office though, it would become SAM (Tail number) instead.

15. I think he leaves from the Capitol aboard Marine One....
... or Marine Buh-Bye or whatever it's called at that point, then flies over to Andrews to catch Air Force One, or, Air Force Get The Hell Out Of Here and Go Away Forever, or whatever it's called at that point.

So, I think it's conceivable that Marine One will be visible from the Mall...?

Edited on Fri Jan-16-09 12:41 AM by VolcanoJen
... traditionally, that's the way it's happened, at least.

It should be a great moment for America. I can only imagine the millions of cheers on the Mall as we witness Marine One taking off into the sky!

Edit:Washington Post puts it like this:

Noon -- Ceremony ends, followed by the inaugural address, luncheon, departure of President Bush and parade.

Hey, I was close! :-) Forgot about the luncheon. Maybe it's just that I can't wait!!!!!!

34. Capitol.
The luncheon is in the Capitol, I think. Then all the congress critters go out, throw shoes rose petals, and he flies away, off to Andrews, where I'm sure his minions will be waiting to send him off to the Dallas McMansion Suburbs aboard callsign "Air Force Worst President Ever."

All of this happens while the rest of us line up along the parade route. I'm telling you, I envision millions of American cheering wildly as that helicopter lifts off. People will be electric, just watching for it. Is he gone yet? Did he go yet? Is he GONE? :-)

It is going to be a thing to see!!!!
