"I wonder" is a declarative statement. There is no question as to whether you wonder that or not. You're not asking if you wonder it; you're stating that, categorically, you DO wonder that. Use a period; use an exclamation point; for all I care, using a freakin' emdash. But for the sweet love of Jesus stop using a question mark when you're not asking a question! Gheeeeaaaa!!

I'm putting all of DU on notice! If you do not desist from this abuse of punctuation...

This hostage buys the farm! You have been warned.

4. And can we get the plurals and possessives straight?
For example: Obama's inauguration day is going to be a wonder ul. The Obamas are going to dance the night away at the inaugural ball.

The Clintons will be celebrating tonight at the Clintons' house. Because Hillary Clinton's day went very well.

27. But my plural's and possessive's are naturally crooked.
It actually hurt to write that. My whole body shuddered.

9. Please advise, O learned one, on the preferred use of elevens.
I like the string of ones and exclamation marks to begin with an e.m. or two, then an eleven, then a couple more e.m.s, another eleven, and close with one or more e.m.

What say you?

!!11!!!11!!,

!11!!!11!!,

!!11!11!!!, etc.

14. We've already established upthread that using "I wonder" as an interjection is a cheat
Plus, I would point out that, myself being rubber and your personage being comprised of glue, all the things that you say will inevitably rebound off of me and thereinby stick unto you.

PSS, nanny nanny boo boo.

p.s. you seem to be much better after you got your initial rant posted so that is good. Now can we go back to the important questions of the day, like how Obama is failing us already?

12. Not Necessarily
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 07:04 PM by MannyGoldstein
If there's a colon involved:

I wonder: is George Bush really as delusional as he sounded yesterday?

But your point is basically correct.

21. If there is a colon following "I wonder" then I think the usage is correct.
As in:

"I wonder: How many people punctuate correctly?"

But only in that case.

24. Even a comma is fine.
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 08:04 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
A person speaking often uses the form: "I wonder... Do ducks always migrate to the same place?"

When written as "I wonder, do ducks always migrate to the same place?" it's hard to imagine anyone thinking the question mark inappropriate.

A dash would be better but a comma is fine IMO.

But the OP is correct that "I wonder if Bush is drinking again?" is wrong.
