Check in here if you're going to be in DC for the Inauguration
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 10:50 AM by LynneSin
I will be in DC the 18th-22nd. If someone is going to be in DC for a few days we need to meet-up, hopefully at the Hawk & Dove. And I'm sure Tuesday night we can have our own Inauguration Party too. My hotel is downtown near the White House and I'm happy to share out my cell phone to anyone who looks like they are somewhat DU regulars (if you have just 5 posts to your name, sorry, but don't want my number plastered over at the Free Republic).

I know there are a bunch of threads but I'm going to ask the DU Admin to pin this thread or post it on the DU homepage.

And when I say 'inauguration' I don't care about ticket status - if you're going to be in DC, we should meetup.

43. Where are you watching the game? In DC? There
are a couple good Eagles bars in the city. Rhino Bar in Georgetown is always full of die hard Iggle fans. I plan to catch the game at the Crystal City Sports Pub. A great sports bar that will be full of Birds fans...and it is only a couple blocks from my house. Hope to make the meet up, never been to a DU one. It works out because I am crashing at a buddies house for the night a few blocks from the H&D on Monday. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!!!

9. OK PARTY AT THE HAWK & DOVE IN WASHINGTON DC ON MONDAY NIGHT
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 03:49 PM by LynneSin
For those of you in town.

This is NOT dinner, please do NOT go there and start a damn dinner tab. I always end up having 2 drinks, half an appetizer and then paying like $100 for the final bill.

Let's meet there around 8pm on Monday night for a DU gathering it's at 329 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE located near the Capital Hill South & Eastern Market stops on the Blue & Orange line of the Metro.

I know what Lynne's talking about, having been stuck once or twice at H&D & chipping in more than my share for the tab. We did go there one time & arranged with H&D to have people pay for their food & drink as they ordered it. Worked out well.

54. You can do anything you want
I showed up 30 minutes late to a DC party at another restaurant and everyone decided to sit down and eat dinner. Well people were coming and going - they'd donate a few dollars but a few didn't give enough to pay for their entire meal. And the thing with that night was I was starting to feel sick (I was out sick 2 days from work with a really bad cold) so all I had was half a beer and a burger but had to put out $150 to get the bill settled.

If people want to order food that's fine. Just do it in small groups so you know that there isn't so massive tab that some poor soul will be stuck with at the end.

40. Help!
I really want be at the inauguration, but don't know D.C. well. I'm in NY and was planning to drive down on late Monday/early Tuesday. I heard there are some parking spaces within the rail system where I could leave the car for the day and then take some kind of public transportation to the Mall. Does anybody have any good tips? A good place to park outside of the city, etc. Thanks for the help.

Driving is going to be a nightmare and parking will be even worse.

I know there were dozens of bus tours out of NYC being setup to go to the inauguration.

46. Thanks, guys.
I have been looking at some buses and it seems like the one's that make advance reservations are all booket out. I think I might have underestimated this thing, leaving things for the last minute. That is why I'm thinking the only way I'll get there is leaving on Mond eve, around 11 pm when traffic should not be so horrific (of course I always think about that Volkswagen commercial, where everyone leaves their house at the same early time, expecting no one to be on the roads...)

Metro and they told there are 3,000 parking spaces at the Greenbelt Station, off 495. They will close at 2 a.m., when people should leave the parking and open it again at 3h30 a.m. The train takes another 30 minutes to D.C. Maybe longer due to high demand of service.

48. Will I be in DC next week?
Well, let's look at the situation.

New Hampshire is the home of the first presidential primary.

Manchester is the largest city in the state.

I signed on as an Obama supporter almost immediately after he announced that he was running for President.

In Manchester, 90% of the Democratic activists were with Hillary, with a smattering for Richardson. Very few current or past elected Democrats were willing to take a chance on an African-American freshman senator with a funny name, That would not be cautious or prudent, after all.

I stuck my neck out for Obama. I did so even though I was involved in an ostensibly non-partisan city election, and my support for Obama would further antagonize the local party regulars.

But did I receive an invitation to the inaugural?

No.

Not a formal invitation to the ceremonies, or to the New England Ball.

Hell, I didn't even get one of those commemorative invitations that don't get you in to anything but look cool hanging on the wall.

Not a damn thing.

So, no, I am not going to be in DC next week, unless the inaugural committee sends me another fundraising email, in which case I will personally insert it into an anatomically inconvenient location of a PIC staffer.

66. No, you have to do it at the farecard machine in the station
First, you tap the card against the circular SmarTrip target. It will display the current balance. You can then insert money or a credit card into the machine. You use the pluses and minuses to indicate how much money you want on it. Just tap it against the circular target to conclude the transaction.

64. PARTY AT HAWK & DOVE ON MONDAY NIGHT AT 8PM!!!!

67. I'll be there with a friend from Va Beach--we are driving up today.
We'll try our best to meet everyone for dinner at the Hawk and Dove Monday night. My friend has MS and cancer, so it depends on how she is feeling as Tuesday will be a big day!

72. we'll be there, but beating an early retreat.
We pulled down our second ticket today, and are coming in from Maryland. We will TRY to leave immediately after the swearing-in, so we get home within our lifetimes.
