Was there another expression for it? I don't remember hearing the term outsourcing much until the 90s.

1. In the 80's
it was called downsizing. It sucked.

2. Before that, it was called getting fired.
They didn't have those sneaky euphemisms in the '60s. And it sucked then, too.

3. I'm not sure there was much of it in those days...
especially in relation to government services. I would imagine the term "sub contracting" would have been used to cover it.

6. Back then other industries
were moving overseas. Steel, autos, and textiles were big ones.

I remember growing up in the 60's there was a big effort to get people to buy clothing made in the USA to stop the outflow of textile jobs. There was a tv ad campaign featuring a song "Look for the Union label, when you are buying ..."

It didn't work.

12. I remember...
"Made in the U-S-A, ^Made in the U-S-A!" back in the 80s. A commercial for textiles.

Now I've got the jinkgle stuck in my head. It seems like it was a popular idea, but then Wal-Mart came along.

15. Actually it DID work, it was just too late as textiles were the first to
go overseas to sweat shops abroad...but the LOOK FOR THE UNION LABEL ads which were from 1975 did generate broad support...perhaps you recall that ditty getting Al Gore into trouble in the campaigns in 00. He remembered (incorrectly) it being from his childhood too. My point is the ads were effective in getting people to buy American but there had already been a critical mass of exploitation by the time the unions came up with the campaign...in fact, Ralph Lauren for a LONG time enjoyed his success as a designer by pushing the fact that all his clothing was made here

7. Thanks.
I was leaning towards independent contracting or some variant.

I know we weren't shipping many jobs oveseas until after NAFTA, but I was thinking along the lines of having someone outside of an office do transcription or clerical work to save money.

4. NAFTA is the one and only culprit for our jobs going overseas
NAFTA! NAFTA! NAFTA!

Who voted for NAFTA? They all did, except for brave souls like Dennis Kucinich. Both major parties, together with corrupt union fat cats and their bureaucracies, have backstabbed the American worker.

9. I disagree
I thought NAFTA was a good idea -- Canada and Mexico were digestible for the US economy and could have been a positive force for change in Mexico.

But it should have been a 20-30 year experiment. The WTO/China bits were too much, too soon. They dove straight to the bottom and took us with them.

10. Not
NAFTA only applies to N. America. It hardly explains jobs moved to other countries.

13. NAFTA is why our GE jobs went to Mexico
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 02:29 AM by IndianaGreen
And GE was not the only manufacturer that moved operations to Mexico. Thomson was another!

14. It was called
"offshore manufacturing".

The term changed because it came to include more than manufacturing.
