. . .up until today I have seen no discussion on the Surgeon General position, but now that he has announced Sanjay Gupta as his choice there is a bunch of 2nd guessing. In the last 12 hours everyone has become an expert on this position and who should hold it.

2. I dunno -- sometimes I think if he couldn't swim, some other DUers would say, "Brilliant move!!!"

There's plenty of fair agreement and disagreement, though.

3. No, the argument would be whether or not his feet actually touch the water or
is there just the tiniest bit of air. Of course meaning he walks on air; hence flies.

39. If recent history has taught us anything, it is that intelligence
has very little to do with one's ability to be elected (or, at the very least, installed) as president. And I'd certainly hate to live in a country where only elected officials, and not ordinary people, were considered to be adequately qualified to criticize the actions of politicians.

5. Walking on water isn't change. It's just more of the same.
Now, back to Sanjay. If Gupta can get fat kids to eat less with some snazzy marketing then he'll have done a better job then any recent SG I can remember. If not, then the DUers here that believe he'll hasten the end of humanity are right and I'm wrong.

7. I like Sanjay, and I don't care who knows it. I also like Leon Panetta.
I know enough about the position, and I think Sanjay is a great fit for the job.

And I know Leon, he's smart as a whip. Both great picks.

People will always gripe. It's the nature of politics.

But not all people will gripe.

10. I walked on water just yesterday.
Of course it was frozen at the time. I slipped a little, but nobody accused me of not knowing how to swim.

Just shows to go ya, put two Democrats in a room and you'll get at least a dozen opinions out of them.

12. Probably because we've constantly heard of him touted as an equal to Michael Phelps
when we've hardly ever even seen him get wet yet.

I must say that I like the use of religious fantasy miracle imagery to make points about him, though; it fits: promises equal achievements, all good results are his doing, yet anything bad that happens is due to something else, and there's no real proof needed to sustain certainty of grandeur.

And you wonder why...

15. On the Gupta issue
its a reaction to Gupta taking issue (pretty nit-picky issues at that) with Sicko in a couple CNN shows. There are also those that are mad because Gupta (and Obama and Clinton) are not pushing a single payer health care system.

Looking at the bigger picture, I think that after 8 years of some of the most right wing government we can imagine--much achieved under the irrational cover of 9/11, fueled by fear--those of us on the left want our turn to get our way on everything.

I have high hopes that we'll see progress once Obama is sworn in. I appreciate what appears to be their pragmatism, but that may make them not set their sights high enough. Granted the economic mess will be front and center for a while.

If we make real progress toward universal health care and getting the uninsured covered--with protection from medical bills bankruptcies--that would be great. If the middle class tax cut happens and the economic plan puts a lot of people to work on our crumbling infrastructure, that will be wonderful progress.

Heck, I'm thrilled that we are returning to an approach that wants to make government work--as opposed to the GOP self fulfilling plan for government to fail (see Katrina, etc.).

I'm confident we'll see some change. I'm afraid, based on many of the posts I see here, that some expected Obama to be a Wellstone or a Kucinich, despite what Obama campaigned on. I expect he will be his own man and in the end be somewhere only slightly left of Bill Clinton, who I perceived as just just slightly left of center.

I do think he is smart enough that when the opportunity to take bigger steps is presented and appears achievable, he'll take it.

26. I think a lot here are suffering from post traumatic shock syndrome
They have been so traumatized by the last 8 years, that they can't let themselves hope. With this trauma they feel the only solution is to go to the farthest extreme on the political spectrum.

We need an intervention by Dr. Phil.

such crap as this OP gets this: but some others would say he can raise the dead so it is ok to have more war dead.
The objective is nothing but division and self service. No point is made in favor of Gupta, just a broad brush against those who actually know about the history of the office of the SG, and about Gupta.
And yep. Everyone's an expert. That's called Democracy.

36. You're always going to have naysayers and detractors
All you can do is hold your own optimism that he'll beat expectations and that these picks, however they're perceived on their individual merits and past history, actually DO work under Obama's direction.

Then maybe some of the critics will have a little less reason to criticize...unless it's an addiction.
