GLBTQ.. what is the Q for? Not to be dense....
I've known for a long time that:

GLBT=Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgendered

when did the Q get added and what does it mean?

This weekend on DU is the first time I saw the Q...

A Slow to catch on straight guy..

1. Can mean "Queer" or "Questioning" or "Quota."
Okay, I made that last one up.

15. God, I hate the word "queer", esp. when used by gays
Queer implies abnormality. If we're to get homosexuality accepted as normal, "queer" is not the word to be using.

23. I often use the term queer with pride. I like it. It means "different" to me.
It's simple, all-inclusive, and highlights the fact that many gay folks feel different from mainstream society. The alphabet soup is difficult to pronounce, clunky, and inevitably leaves some people out. "Gay" works ok but also means men, not women.

I like the term "queer" and use it often.

5. You can also see LGBTQQ
Not included in the alphabet soup, are the intersexed (they are born that way, despite of what the ignorant Pope says), and many other variants.

17. I saw a group that was LGBTQQIA
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, questioning, intersexed and allies. I knew some of the people in it, they were engineers and very thorough.

27. Because bisexuals are closeted gays or sleazy or ____ (name your stereotype there, please)
Been there, know that. (the stereotypes, which modern TV loves to hype up as well. Even by gay people, right Russ? And I have no time for tolerating stereotypes.)

Of course, just claim up front to somebody you're bi and see what happens. Trust me, it's not a party waiting to happen. Especially if you're pro-monogamy/LTR/partnership. Admitting one has attractions for both genders does not mean one is a pedophile or anything else, sorry Rick Warren...

21. It means "Questioning"
It is used by gay organizations that work with people who are questioning their identity. Sometimes this is a very long, painful period.

This helps the staffers who work with them place them in the correct programs and give them the support they need.

25. It's hard to be dense when there's no sense of consistency in the first place.
Q = Queer
Q = Questioning

I'm sure you know what G, L, B, and T stand for (FWIW, I'm a 'B' and I don't let it rule my life and everything I do, but I digress.)

Other gay sites will have other arrangements of letters put up by various contributors. Here are some of the letters and their definitions:

Z = HIV positive
S = S/M
I = (currently do not know, but "I" has been used and therefore means something - hopefully not "Infidelity" but some people do like to do that)
S = Straight
L = Leather
A = Associated
A = Asexual (??)

I've seen plenty of acronyms and the letters are often not in the same layout either (GLBT, LGBT, LGTBQ, GLBTA, et cetera).

Indeed, what happened to just "queer" anyway? Granted, it's no longer 1978...

Next thing you know, Post Alpha-Bits Cereal(tm) will replace the rainbow flag... that's how frivolous this naming convention is becoming, especially when some psychologist on gay.com had to put up "LGBTQAZ" in that article from 2 months ago...

32. What happened to queer?
Actually, the market research companies showed that the word "queer" was being perceived very different by gays and lesbians in different age groups. The older ones took it more as an insult while some of the younger ones saw it as internal slang.

One of the reasons there is so much inconsistency is that this movement has made huge strides in just two generations. The life experiences of your average 60-year-old tend to be much different than the 20-year-olds. There is a long way to go, however, as illustrated by recent events.

at least I think, this is coming from a heterosexual woman so I'm hardly an expert.

It means "questioning," especially in reference to young people, and the term has made its way into the bureaucracy. See the example below:
