Despite the best efforts of SOME DUers to paint me and others as enemies of Obama who don't care....

about other progressive issues and who want to make our issue the only topic of discussion, I want to say that I remain committed to Obama on most if not all other progressive issues, I remain committed to supporting the Democratic Party, and I acknowledge others who oppose my point of view as not necessarilly homophobic or opposed to gay and lesbian equality in general.

I also want to continue to acknowledge the tremendous support of non-GLBTQ DUers who express support for our right to freedom of speech for as long as we feel motivated to speak out.

6. Excellent comment, but
why do people consider expressing frustration with a discussion that has become counterproductive---people being abusive of each other---an attempt to quash free speech? The overused claim that people who are expressing another opinion is the same as saying STFU is also counterproductive. When the discussion becomes counterproductive, it doesn't hurt to take a breather and pick up the discussion when cooler heads prevail. It happens all the time when debates turn into heated arguments. These discussions don't effect change immediately, and they can be and will be continued. If DU was a physicial space where people were arguing in the same abusive fashion, there would no doubt be an attempt to break off the discussion. The notion that a heated argument, when people are becoming more and more vebally abusive, should be allowed to run its course is not a valid defense of free speech. That's simply encouraging verbal abuse.

9. I understand what you are saying...

and there is plenty of counterproductive verbal abuse here in GDP. I also want to point out that there are pearls buried within the waste where progress is being made in the discussion. I've learned a lot about my own community's viewpoint from this thread in GLBT posted by tom_paine, for instance:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=221x108670

I suppose that there is always the risk that people may turn against the Democratic Party, or that straight DUers who are on the fence may turn against the GLBTers and some of their supporters, but I think that the advantages outweigh the risks while there is progress to be made.

13. appreciate diversity of opinion too...
I was referring to a hope that you represent a majority of GBLT when you said that (you) "acknowledge others who oppose my point of view as not necessarily homophobic or opposed to gay and lesbian equality in general."

I caucused for Obama.
I voted for Obama.
I wrote checks for Obama.
I phone-banked for Obama.
I cried my eyes out with happiness watching the election returns on TV.
I was, and continue to be OVER-the-MOON that he's going to be our next president.
I love that man!

So maybe you can imagine how disappointed and hurt I am,by his choice for the inaugural invocation.
It still feels like a hit to the solar plexis.
The inauguration was supposed to be my victory party too.

19. Understand
I just don't understand how blatant disrespect for the
Constitution, continually lying to the American public and
wanting to spend a TRILLION dollars in new government programs
(for the 1st 4 years) that will become permanent and thus a
further drag on our economy, and wanting to stifle the cheap
energy sources we have now with more expensive - less
thermally efficient fuels can be considered progressive

27. ahem... you rock!
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We are confronted by powerful forces telling us to rely on the goodwill and understanding of those who profit by exploiting us. They deplore our discontent, they resent our will to organize, so that we may guarantee that humanity will prevail and equality will be exacted.

29. Thanks themartyred !

Dr. King's wisdom echoes throughout the generations, and the quote that you posted is particularly relevant. Many of the right-wing forces behind Rick Warren are exactly those "telling us to rely on the goodwill and understanding of those who profit by exploiting us." As I've tried to point out in other posts, the nation as a whole is suffering because of their influence during the Bush reign.
