Why DADT will be repealed within a few months
There's no political downside. That's why. something like 75& to 80% of Americans think gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve openly. What will the repeal mean for other civil rights for the GLBT community is the question. My answer is probably not much.

Here are the GLBT civil rights issues I want to see Obama address- if only in a bully pulpit kind of way:

- adoption
- federal rights for same sex couples in marriage/civil unions
- getting rid of the awful DOMA
- ENDA

If he's the advocate he says he is, he should set up a commission/task force on civil rights for the GLBT community. And we should keep the pressure on him to do the right thing.

1. Obama apparently said it won't be until 2010
he wants to lay the groundwork with the military, apparently.

2. I don't even believe 2010. It will take an act of congress to change it, and who knows
what congress will want to do in the runup to the next election. And after 2010, who knows whether we'll even have the votes in congress to repeal it?

4. DADT is my lowest priority on GLBT issues, but worth eliminating just the same.

5. Excellent idea on the commission, Cali. But I disagree slightly on one point.
A win for civil rights is a win for civil rights. Repeal of DADT will have a greatly beneficial effect on the other areas you list. So while DADT repeal may not directly affect the gay community at large it opens the door to the other areas. It shows the way, so to speak. I remember when DADT was enacted and how furious the debate was. The most vociferous anti gays in that argument are, by and large, no longer with us. If you look back on the level of that debate you would be surprised at how goofy it sounded (and would sound to just about anybody today, not just activists and liberals). We just don't think that way generally any more...

great post!

10. I did and you'd probably be surprised that I agree with most of it
BUT - the question is whether it is better to shoot at each other over this, or take positive action that will help.

I have problems with the means, not the ends
