Mother of Palin daughter's boyfriend arrested
NCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska State Troopers have arrested the mother of Bristol Palin's boyfriend on drug charges.
Sherry L. Johnston was arrested Thursday after troopers served a search warrant on a Wasilla home. The 42-year-old Johnston has been charged with six felony drug counts.
Troopers did not identify the drug involved in a brief mention on the agency's Web site.
However, trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said late Friday in a news release that the charges were in connection to the drug OxyContin, a strong prescription painkiller.

Now here's an interesting tidbit - Track Palin, the oldest of the Palin kids, was mentioned to having quite the appetite for Oxycontin habit himself (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/10/21322/7302)

hmmmmmm.......

4. It's a real problem in many rural communities
not sure the cause...less stigma than just buying heroin?

5. Well, last time I checked, you can't get a prescription for heroin.
And since oxycodone (the active ingredient in those pills) has an effect pretty close to smack at high enough doses, it only makes sense that it'd be used the same way. Including people crushing the stuff, cooking it up and shooting it.

16. That's why its easier *everywhere*
but I live in an urban area, and heroin is widely abused here, oxycodone less so. And availability doesn't wash, it's easy to make heroin, and you don't need a high powered lab to do it.

I suspect that good, moral rural people find it easier to justify abusing a drug a doctor gives them then a drug some nameless hustler does.

6. Thanks, Lynne
I was just going to post that. It was reported on tonight's local news. My guess is there was so much speculation that it was meth, they decided to get out ahead of the story a bit.

7. Maybe this explains why the wedding seems to have fizzled.
The investigation was going on for a while. Investigators were State Troopers. They probably told SP and she may have told Bristol to wait till this "blows" over.

10. Wasn't the wedding scheduled for Spring '09?
Bristol is due 12/20 and ol' Levi dropped out of high school to pursue some apprenticeship as a North Slope electrician (thanks to Taaaaawd). Or maybe I'm hallucinating, without the Oxy.

As long as they stay far, far away from 1600 Penn or Number One Observatory Circle.

9. Possible "recorded conversations"????
My guess is that alot of people in Wasilla are a little nervous right now if they have had any conversations with Johnston in which they openly talked about oxycontin.

Kalytiak said the standard protocol for drug arrests is that law enforcement officials observe one drug buy, then get a warrant that permits them to record conversations and document more buys.

"I'd imagine standard protocol was followed," the district attorney said.

14. Wooten payback??? Note that it was the Alaska State Troopers
serving a warrant in Wasilla...which has its own police force.

Not that I'm complaining....
