CNN Wolf reporting Womens Groups not happy with Obama's cabinet
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 05:24 PM by BrentTaylor
How unfair is that? Instead of complaining. Why aren't they happy?? I know people here are pissed at Obama now about the Warren stuff. But this complaint isn't fair to Obama in my opinion

You have 5 Women in the Cabinet. 2 of them running 2 of the biggest 3 Departments.
Not to mention Obama has named a whole host of women to Senior WH positions. Too many to name here.
A woman is over the entire WH Communications.

He's named the first woman to lead the SEC.
He named a woman to lead the SBA.
Also reportedly close to naming a woman as Surgeon General and to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

These are reasons to celebrate. And all we hear is how they are so disappointed in him. And of course throw the all the too common "We worked hard to get you elected"

None of these interest Groups are ever happy.

15. But we're talking about 15 or 16 positions
too small of a sample size to make that argument work.

21. No group is too small to divy up percentage-wise. 8 women would be about right.

23. I disagree
You can't make a cabinet of 15 or 16 make up the demographics of the country. There aren't any Native Americans, Muslims, Midgets, Gays, Arab Americans, etc.... in the cabinet.

27. The problem with this statement is we're talking about TWO different kinds...
...of people being represented in proportional numbers ~ men and women.

4. Interest group politics doomed the Democrats in the 1970's and 1980's
The party became perceived as the party of "groups", rather than regular people.

16. You said that, not me.
What I meant, though, was that interest group voters believe their special issue(s) should be THE only thing that matters to government, and right now! No compromise! And if they don't get what they want, look out, you'll have a temper tantrum on your hands. They have no concept of working together as a team and as a party. It's all about me, me, me.

And those voters come from all kinds of backgrounds, races, and issue agendas. This has been a perennial problem in the Democratic Party. It is a major reason for the party losing 7 of 10 presidential election between 1968 and 2004, and only (barely) clearing 50% of the popular vote once.

5. NOW is not happy about Rick Warren either, and rightfully so!
NOW to President-elect Obama: We Hope You Will Change Your Mind

Don't Grant Rick Warren a Prominent Platform at Historic Inauguration

WASHINGTON - December 19 - Millions of people are finalizing their plans to travel to Washington, D.C. on January 20, 2009, to be part of your historic inauguration as the 44th president of the United States. We are all hoping to relive the joy of election night when we stood side by side believing that, together, we can change our country and our world for the better.

Today, we are disheartened that one of the voices that may be privileged to be part of this historic moment is that of Rick Warren. His delivering the invocation would be an insult to all of us, women and men, who support women's right to self-determination. His presence is offensive to all of us, gay and straight, who support equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people.

We understand your desire to engage people from opposing sides of many issues. But dialogue requires treating your opponents with respect. Rick Warren has compared abortion to the Holocaust and stated that he would not vote for a "Holocaust denier." He implies that those of us who support abortion rights are equivalent to Nazis.

Rick Warren worked to take away the rights of LGBT people in California by supporting Proposition 8, calling it a "moral issue that God has spoken clearly about" and stating the "homosexual marriage is one of the five issues that are not negotiable." He calls LGBT people "unnatural."

Words do matter, President-elect Obama. Words lifted you to the White House and all of us to a place where we felt included in your vision. By choosing Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration you have deeply offended progressive people who worked and voted for you in record numbers. This is not the tone we hoped you would set on this historic day - and giving a platform to a messenger of intolerance does not send a message of acceptance and change.

There are limitless opportunities for your administration to work with people who do not agree on every issue, but who nonetheless agree that we must end poverty, address climate change, and achieve human rights for all. We are deeply disappointed that you have made a different choice and hope that you will reconsider Rick Warren's inclusion in this important and historic celebration.

President-elect Obama, you can still select a minister who will speak to our collective vision for hope, change and the promise that we will all be part of this great country, and we urge you to do just that.

12. There are 15 cabinet members. That's too small a pool.
You would not and should not expect 15 people to reflect nationwide demographics with any fidelity.

How many muslim cabinet members are there? Atheist? Native American? Handicapped?

This whole argument is stupid.

ethnicity and interest group. Let's cross the best qualified candidates off the list and pick the next members by gene pool. Sheesh.

25. This is crazy. Everyday a woman is being announced as being part of Obama's administration.
His cabinet and other high profile positions.

What the hell else do they want?

Obama should just say "Fuck it. You can have McCain as president. I'm outta here." Of course Obama isn't like that.

There are no quotas in the Obama administration. He's picking qualified, well-rounded people to be in his cabinet.

It might be, for all I know. But Wolfie could be pulling this "fact" outta his ass. Not like he hasn't done it before, to stir up trouble. He's a frequent practitioner of the "lets you and him fight" game.

29. Every group thinks they should get everything they want.
That's not the way it works. I've never seen so much griping, whining, bitching about any President by his own party before he even takes the oath. Many groups seem to think they are the only ones in the country and the only ones who matter and Obama should focus all his attention on them. There are 5 women in his cabinet, but women's groups are still bitching? I'm a woman, and they can bite me. I'm disgusted.
