2. Let's make it simpler
Reforming the question to a more general one, it becomes "Is using belief in one system of beliefs a valid excuse for not accepting another set of beliefs?"
Seems a clear yes to me.

The trickier part is whether the so-called bigotry is actually based on religious teachings or are religious teachings cherry-picked to support bigotry that would exist with or without the religion?
