1. Well, sexism is okay here - no reason to think homophobia isn't. nt

7. Hated that too!
And there's still way too much sexism here.
If you're going to be against something, at least let it be something people have a choice on.

6. It is okay to do as long as try to spin it as being better for the nation...
then it is okay to push others to the ground and piss on them... as long as YOU (not you, but the homophobes) and the nation are doing fine... don't worry we will wait till people get around to us.

Du'ers not disgusted by that surprised me. Did not say Du'ers legitimized homophobia.

16. That is a foul exaggeration.
Obama has invited Rick Warren to offer a two-minute invocation, a message that will surely NOT be laced with hateful or exclusionary rhetoric or implications. Of course, this comes nowhere close to legitimizing homophobia as you claim. Sad that has to be clarified.

13. Labelling the result of widespread ignorance as bigotry serves no useful purpose
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 01:58 PM by slackmaster
LGBT people are going to win on same-sex marriage and other civil rights issues.

They are going to win through education, and by demonstrating by example that they have intelligence, integrity, and dignity; not by screaming "Bigot!" at everyone who holds the incorrect idea that sexual orientation and gender identity are products of conscious choices.

15. Do you really think Warren believes it's a choice?
He's just pandering to those who think that. (or want to think that).

22. Yes, I do believe he believes that
But it's possible he is just pandering. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

The Rick Warren pick absolutely floors me. Work has been crazy for me lately so I'm just now reading up on this issue and I'm disappointed.

21. Actually, what many are trying to explain...
...is that there is nothing much TO "get over" if you would stop and think for a minute about what Obama is doing. which he has explained rather clearly.

24. What Obama says he wants is negated by Warren's bigotry IMO
I love that Obama wants to "keep the spirit of unity" as described here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/18/obamas-talking-points-on_n_152056.html

I just don't see how Warren fits into this spirit. I also don't understand how Obama can praise Warren for his "social justice" while also disagreeing with him on gay rights. Advocating less rights for one group of people goes against everything I understand about social justice.

25. Ahh... I see.
Unity... but not cooperating on anything with people who disagree with us. Unity is only for.. you know, people we're already unified with who are just like us on all the important issues.

As for how Obama can praise him on one thing while disagreeing with him on another... how is that not self evident? He agrees with his stance on THESE social justive issues. Says so. He disagrees with his stance on this other one. Says so. Where does the confusing part come into play?

Advocating less rights for one group of people goes against everything I understand about social justice.

What a coincidence, me too. And you know something... I'm pretty sure Obama falls in that category also, what with the whole disagreeing with Warren on it thing. On the other hand advocating for the reduction of poverty falls rather nicely in line with my views on social justice... how about yours?

26. is disagreeing possible without the snide sarcasm?
I truly hope so.

The way I see it, the gay rights movement is doing exactly what it should be doing. Speaking out against a person who advocates Prop 8 makes sense. It also makes sense for women rights groups to speak out against someone who compares choice to the Holocaust.

As for unity, where do you draw the line? Should neo nazi groups and the klan be invited to speak for the sake of unity? Ultimately, I guess the question is what does "keeping with the spirit of unity" truly mean? Is it simply about inviting people who Obama disagrees with like you say, or is it about shining a light on community leaders who practice a sense of unity in their everyday lives as well as preach it?

I personally think it means the latter which is why Warren makes no sense to me.

I'll eat my own over the issue of civil rights. It's the very core of my entire belief system.
