I have an idea: How about we get rid of these fucking invocations!
What part of "separation of Church and State" do government officials not understand? I, for one, am damn sick and tired of being ordered to stand and bow my head at state functions so that some yutz can spout gibberish to his/her particular deity in order to "bless" the proceedings. Fuck that noise. Seriously. The practice should be banned. If you can't compel children to say prayers in public schools anymore than why should adults have to do it at official ceremonies? You wanna pray? Go to your church or temple, or pray to yourself. Keep me the hell out of it, TYVM.

As for picking Warren to do it, :wtf: Whoever advised him to pick that hateful two bit huckster should be fired.

When did this start?

9. No, not literally but it's about as close to a mandate as it gets.
The social pressure to go along with it is enormous and social pressure is every bit as powerful as the force of law, if not more so.

11. I agree. After that shit he pulled on him at the Saddleback Forum.
You'd think Warren would be the LAST preacher he'd want.

5. Matthew chapter 6, verses 5-6
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

6. Obama is, first of all, a politician . . .
Which is a good thing. A pure idealist would be eaten alive in the Oval Office and then where would we be?

Invocations also give me the pip. They typically are decent moral messages ruined by dependence on fictional sky-dwellers. It's embarassing.

However, as a substantial percentage of the population is either godsmacked or pretends to be -- and I have to live among them -- I just let it go.

It's an aggravation but not an outrage.

7. Oh I hear ya. My atheist ass stands there with my head bowed along with everyone else.
I'm idealistic more in theory than in practice. But hey, a girl can hope for a successful lawsuit, can't she?

13. I won't do it anymore
I go to formal military functions fairly often, and stand there looking around during the obligatory prayer. A few events ago another officer was doing the same. He just looked at me a smiled. Two of us out of two hundred.

So far only one person, other than my boyfriend, has commented on it.

Sorta copied your thought before I knew ya posted it! Our founders wanted a secular nation, anybody's god should stay out it entirely --- that is, if we were a secular nation.

I definitely don't need or want a preacher to do that.

The whole religion thing bugs me.
