1. Interesting stuff
I'm fascinated by this and I've been watching it for an hour. I don't think I'll get much else done today. Right now they are dealing with the challenges of the Coleman vote by Franken. They do not seem to be overly picky. It will be interesting when they get to the challenged votes for Franken.

2. I know, I am looking forward to Coleman's challenge of Franken votes in
St. Louis and Ramsey counties.

I am not surprised by any of their rulings yet...

3. This is the first day I have watched this
Does anyone know - are they handling all the challenges to the Coleman votes first, or do they split them as the day goes on? Will we see any challenges to the Franken votes today or will that come later in the week?

So far, they are letting most of the challenges for identifying marks go through, unless the voter was stupid enough to sign their ballot.

5. They are doing it by county, I believe. The crawl says they are looking at Hennepin County
I can't wait to see what they do about the "LIZZARD PEOPLE" ballot.

12. Reporters are indicating they are doing almost all Franken challenges
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 02:09 PM by Hansel
With a few Coleman challenges here and there. I've been listening for a couple of hours now and I think they are going by sub-district, but not county. They are jumping all over the state. I've heard cities mentioned that are in Isanti, St Louis, and Anoka Counties. I haven't paid close enough attention to catch them all.

Isanti and Anoka County are in the middle of the state north of the Twin Cities, and St. Louis county is where Duluth is, in Northeastern MN. I've only heard one challenge in Anoka County, which is just north of Minneapolis and I believe is the third largest County in MN, right behind Ramsey County in which St. Paul is located. I think there were likely more challenges than 1 in Anoka Co due to its size.

Hennepin County is the largest county and is where Minneapolis is. Ramsey and Hennepin County are big Franken strongholds and I haven't notice any challenges from there. Anoka is more conservative which is where I live and I would put Isanti in that same category.

St. Louis County leans Franken in the city of Duluth (where the U of M has a campus), but the rest of the county sounds like it's more conservative. I'm guessing since I don't know much about that area.

I'm guessing that they are picking sub-districts where Franken had the most challenges 1st. I think Richie is bending over backward to be fair to Coleman so that when he goes through and rejects some of Coleman's challenges he has more credibility.

9. Right now they are doing only Franken challenges
so you would expect Coleman to rack up a lot of votes. I watched for a while and so far Franken has picked up 41 votes that the local election judges ruled against him on and Coleman has lost several votes for various reasons that the local judges had ruled in his favor.

The key will be the quality (and quantity) of the Coleman challenges. If a higher number of them are "frivolous" than in the case of the Franken challenges, then Franken should do quite well

17. They agreed yesterday to do the Franken challenges first
In fact, during the course of their review this morning there were a few Coleman challenges mixed in which they removed and set aside to be considered with the Coleman challenges after the Franken challenges were completed.

8. I missed it. What did they do with
the last one before lunch? the one that was filled out almost like a butterfly ballot, in the margin?

10. They gave it to Franken
If it is the one I think you mean where the voter filled in between the two boxes in the left margin next to Franken.

18. Challenge recount totals
Here's a link to the tally on the challenged recounts:

http://www.startribune.com/politics/national/senate/

There's also a link to the challenged absentee ballots on the same page.

They should be returning from the Supreme Court hearing in a few minutes.
