Who will sing at the Obama Inauguration?
Edited on Sat Dec-13-08 11:16 PM by bluestateguy

edit: I was not aware that Ray Charles was dead (so I guess that means we would have to cross him off the list)

2. It will all be good as long as Beyonce doesn't sing..........
She has problems deciding which note to sing so she often sings them all within a fraction of a second.

26. I'll second that
She sings sharp most of the time and it drives me nuts.
I hope they don't go "celebrity" and go with talent instead.

it would be one little glimmer to look forward to singing for the new President from her hometown.

I really hope she does.

9. Any New Orleans musician
Obama and America owes that to New Orleans, to show that they at least are aware of how the city that gave birth to jazz still is in ruins. Anybody from Allen Toussaint to Leigh Harris (Little Queenie)- in fact- Obama ought to show how much he cares and have them all sing & play.

37. I read that too
I don't think it has been confirmed yet, but reports are saying that the Obama camp asked Shakira and she has been a big supporter of his so I can't imagine she would turn this down.

http://www.postchronicle.com/news/original/article_212191278.shtml

Superstar singer Shakira will celebrate U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's election victory - with a performance at his inauguration party.

The Hips Don't Lie hitmaker is reportedly slated to join stars including Susan Sarandon, Spike Lee, and Anne Hathaway at the glitzy event in Washington, D.C. next month (Jan09).

25. Sadly, Don Ho passed away. Talk about yer lost opportunities.
And from just looking at Barack and Michelle, you just KNOW they were Don Ho freaks.

Ok. If they wanted to make the conservatives' heads explode, Pete Seeger and/or Arlo Guthrie would be good picks.

Would that Odetta were with us still. Always liked her. Attended one of her concerts and loved it. Other folk singers bashed Reagan, but none with the ferocity of Odetta. She was strictly top-drawer.

How about Bill Charlap and his group? They're awfully good.

Emmylou Harris. A progressive, un-labelable musician with deep roots down home and a global vision. If she would sing "From Boulder to Birmingham" at the Inaugural concert, I would declare thereupon that Obama's presidency was a huge success.

I like to think that Wynton Marsalis would be interested in that gig. The man can play any composition out there.

And Doc Watson. The man's been trying to retire for a quarter of a century but people love his music too much.

Also Dar Williams. What a vivid, true voice, and what a tremendous lyricist. I think the Obamas would appreciate hearing someone as bright and insightful as they are up on that stage.

27. Springsteen
For the official ceremony on the Capitol steps, Bruce and an acoustic guitar, nice and simple.

There are a dozen inaugural balls, each with several performer slots, so a lot of performers will get a spot.
