I really doubt Caroline Kennedy will be appointed to the Senate.
1) More and more NY reps are speaking out against it. I doubt Paterson wants to antagonize powerful allies in the House.

2) I don't think she has the stomach for it. I like and admire her, but I've never seen any sign that she has the stomach for the rough and tumble of elective politics or the mundane and grueling task of campaigning for it. It's one thing to campaign part time for Obama, it's another to put herself in the position of a candidate herself.

I just don't see it happening. And I don't see her running in 2010 if it doesn't.

5. I don't see how we know that she'd be a great senator
she's lived her life wisely outside of the public sphere. She's edited a few books. She's raised money for the NYC school system, she's sat on boards, but none of that tells us how effective she'd be in the Senate.

8. Yep, I just think she'd be great. Very possibly among the VERY
greatest.

Who knows but that a crescendo legacy of decades of public service might not be realized in the example of this dedicated, tough, bright, progressive woman.

Go, Caroline!

24. You mean, aside from her general success in the projects she's taken on?
It's funny to see people doubting CK can manage the most exclusive club of all in this country because she may have been somehow too sheltered to be in exclusive clubs.

That's what it amounts to.

22. 90% of the Senate has never been on the front lines of anything.

lol

(Okay, that may be just a little cynical. :) )

16. call me a sucker for this appointment
My heart was broken when John Jr. died, so much promise unfulfilled.

Caroline has stepped into the public square with conviction and a willingness to serve her country. Obama has inspired her and she will inspire us in any capacity she chooses to serve.

My money's on Paterson to choose wisely. Loved his joke at the convention: "If John McCain is the answer, the question must be ridiculous."

Camelot: Gone but not forgotten.

21. Agree on all counts. The Kennedys are a privileged family but they are
more dedicated to public service than almost any privileged family in the nation's history.

The philosophers tell us -- and I believe them -- that a person who cannot seduce others cannot save them either. The Kennedys seduce us but they also offer to save us.

Agree with you whole-heartedly that we can honor Gov. Paterson's decision.

But I'm sure rooting for CKS.

25. What we don't know are the logs of the fire we all gather around.
Edited on Sat Dec-13-08 04:21 PM by Old Crusoe
And as far as that goes, we don't really know anything, do we?

We know what we know about Mozart -- that his music was usually lovely and his fly was usually open.

We know that Leonardo was a mind ahead of its time, and we have the sketches to prove it.

We know that picking up rattlesnakes is not a good idea, even if you're a deep-hills pastor trying to make a Scriptural point. Turns out, most rattlesnakes aren't Christian. They've done surveys.

We know that several of Roman Gabriel's down-field passes are still airborne.

We know that Tom Cruise is more or less an idiot.

We know that we don't like Jim Imhofe. (SEE also under 'Tom Cruise')

We know that lemonade on a July afternoon is a simple blessing.

We know that pre-ghost Scrooge is a poopyhead but that post-ghost Scrooge is a generous soul who wants Tiny Tim to walk witout a cane.

Ok, that's it. That's all we know.

11. "Yes, hello? Ms. ( ) / Mr. ( )? This is Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.
"It's been a couple years since the appointment, and I've talked this over with a lot of people, and I think I'd be interested in seeking re-election. Do you think I could maybe count on your support?"

In that scenario, it is my best hunch that the answer would be 'Yes, you better by god believe it, Senator," and that the fundraising and grassroots organizing components of a successful election would be instantaneously achieved.

CKS would attract the best of the best of the best.

I'm likely to go on a multi-state rampage and well into Canada, laying to waste everything in my path.

14. I love her but to me she's more Bouvier than Kennedy. Her mother
wouldn't allow Caroline or John to "socialize" when they were older with the Kennedy kids. She'd be a wonderful Ambassador, either to France or Ireland. Both countries know her, she's fluent in French, and it would be a prestigious position for her.

15. if you already believe she shouldn't be Senator, you will find reasons to support your case
That doesn't make them real.

Also,
I would wager that Caroline Kennedy has more stomach than you've ever displayed.
Her Father and Uncle were both assassinated, yet she is willing to stand up in Public and carry their torch.
She is a brave and compassionate woman.
She will make a fine Senator,
and maybe one day, even a President.

26. No, that's not what I meant. I'd love to see what kind of a candidate she'd be
and you can't see that in an appointment. I don't want to see her appointed. and that's completely different from not wanting to see her in the Senate.

27. Whomever is appointed is probably going to run in 2010.
"I'd love to see what kind of a candidate she'd be and you can't see that in an appointment. I don't want to see her appointed. and that's completely different from not wanting to see her in the Senate."

What you are proposing is unrealistic.

Governor Patterson is probably going to appoint someone who will want to run in 2010.

He is aware that we need to keep the seat.

This hair-splitting of yours makes for a nice theory, but in practice, appointing a placeholder who will quietly retire in 2010 is not going to happen.
