Bush said he didn't believe the bible was necessarily literally true in 2004...
Why didn't the fundies go nuts then?? It was published in a NY Times article, then. I'm looking for the link, but it's hard to find via google with all the brouhaha over his latest remarks.

The fundies tied their star to his wagon, and now are looking for a way to untie it. Screw 'em.

1. In one of the 2008 Republican presidential debates,
...the candidates responded to a question about whether everything in the Bible is true by saying that the Bible contains parables (which it does, but that doesn't answer the question.)

2. It was published QUIETLY in a NYT article that broadcast media would NOT further.

Lies that targeted the actual existing Naval records of Kerry, on the other hand, deserved 3 months of constant airtime.

3. because the fundies don't believe in god, either.
They believe in the oppressive activities of the bible, and not in the actual ideas of religion.

4. Here's a 2000 NYT article - that might be what you are looking for
Edited on Thu Dec-11-08 05:58 PM by karynnj
''Religion to me is a very personal matter, and I just happen to be in a public position where people want to have a chance to find out something about me, and I think this'' -- his recommitment to Jesus Christ -- ''is one of the defining moments of my life. But I do so understanding that I am a lowly sinner as well.''

Mr. Bush said he read a Bible passage daily, even on the campaign trail. Asked if he believed the Bible was literally true, word for word, and an infallible guide to history and science, he said, ''From Scripture you can gain a lot of strength and solace and learn life's lessons. That's what I believe, and I don't necessarily believe every single word is literally true.''

''I think that for example on the issue of evolution, the verdict is still out on how God created the earth,'' he said, a cautious response that would be acceptable to some creationists yet separates Mr. Bush from the Biblical fundamentalists. ''I don't use the Bible as necessarily a way to predict the findings of science.''

The entire article shoiws he was trying to be the "compassionate conservative - on the surface saying things moderates were ok with and using code to say something else to his base.

6. Bush doesn't believe every thing he says is literally true
And he was talking to the base that knows their candidates openly lie when in the public to get elected

7. But think of the children.
The ones who worshiped bush as their savior, what will they do, what will they do?

9. Your image is obviously from "Jesus Camp"...my god that
documentary scared the crap out me....all of those children crying and screaming and the adults egging them on....it looked like child abuse to me.

And the best part was Haggard's weird and paranoid reaction to the camera....very prescient considering how he was busted for the escort/meth thing later.
