Illinois Gov Blagojevich can still appoint Obama's replacement
According to an article I read the Illinois governor can still, even while he is under arrest, appoint a replacement to Obama's senate seat. If this is the case then what was the rush to arrest this man. According to some statements I have read the FBI stated their urgency to move on this man because of the imminent decisions he was about to make. Yet even now in custody, he can still make those decisions. At least until he quits or becomes impeached. And a impeachment process would take some time, right. Is there anything the government can do now to stop Gov Blagojevich from doing what he planned to do all along.

One big question now is whether Blagojevich retains the right to name Obama's successor if he remains in custody or even under indictment. The answer is yes, according to Fitzgerald.

Jay Stewart, executive director of Chicago's Better Government Association, agreed. He said Blagojevich retains the right to fill the senate vacancy until he's out of office, which won't happen unless he quits or is removed from office by impeachment.

1. And the Senate could refuse to seat him.
Pending Blago's removal from power.

6. I knew Blagojevich was a crook when I voted for him in '06
He's a bigger crook today.

It would be difficult for a jury in Illinois to be seated where people didn't think he was a crook.

The guy is as crooked as they come.

He's a crook.

8. Oh please.
There are Republican crooks and Democratic crooks

Blago is just a crook, and not a very good one at that.

14. Because Blago is a crook.
Like the poster upthread, I voted for him in 06, thinking "there's no way he could get worse," and he got worse. He got caught on tape trying to sell a senate seat. His approval ratings hover around 13%, despite him tying his name to popular things like healthcare for kids and expanding preschool. He's been one bad news story away from impeachment for years. This wasn't a politically motivated takedown, this was long overdue.

10. And whoever is appointed could refuse to accept it
No one appointed now by Blago could possibly expect to win the seat in an election and he/she would be tainted with the stain of Blago forever.

Of course, he can still appoint himself.

11. Appoint himself, get no favors, get convicted and jailed, all in
two short years. It will be a disaster for ILL if he appoints himself now.

The Senate should refuse to seat him if he does that, and that will force his little behind to confess to his crimes and get a plea bargain.
