5. Has anyone thought "what if"?
If Clark were the nominee, there wouldn't have been any swift boat ads. Clark might very well have been the one 11 points ahead. Though Shrub would have looked for some small flaw of Clark's to exaggerate, so then again, who really knows?

What would they have said to smear him. They would have made some shit up because they sure couldn't have talked about the Econoomy.

It is not yet America's strategy. It is the administration's strategy. In another four years it could be America's strategy.

This is an important election.

15. Thanks for the heads-up!
Every time I listen to Wes Clark I learn something. He is so articulate and can break down complex geopolitical issues so that the layperson can understand them. I very much admire him, I believe he will play a key role in the Kerry administration either formally or informally.

Saying he was against the war...he testifyed against the war.

He just gave a brilliant answer for Kerrys vote.

It sounded a lot more credible than Kerry has ever stated.

45. He said it was because,
since Vietnam, Democrats have been seen as the anti-military, and thus, by extension, the anti-defense party. So when 9/11 happened, people naturally turned to the Republicans to protect them. In 2002, the Democrats ceded the war on terror to Bush by default, bowing to public perceptions. He pointed out that Clinton did a fine job on national security issues with regards to the Balkans and so on, that there was no reason for the Democrats to suffer by way of comparison to the Republicans on this issue, but they have to articulate a message.

That's a rough condensation, but basically the gist of it. If you look at it, he has an excellent point: a large number of "activists" were anti-Iraqi war, but I never did see a positive Democratic plan for the terror war until Clark himself came along, before he was a candidate. They were out there, but no one was talking about them. Kerry is trying to articulate a positive message on the issue, but the Iraqi war sucks up all the energy in the foreign policy debate.

Warning: dense soapboxing ahead:

The foreign policy debate should have two components: 1) How do you plan on dealing with terrorism; and 2) What are you going to do about Iraq. In that order of importance. Kerry has handled the first one, but his message is being ignored because all people, the Bush people as well as the angry left, want to talk about is Iraq -- not what are you going to do about Iraq going forward, but should we have invaded Iraq in the first place. It's a loser, both for our 2004 hopes, and for the country, because Iraq is a done deal, but deflects attention form the broader issue of how do we handle the war on terror. If the country were to have a serious debate on it, I have little doubt Bush, pushing pre-emption, would lose, both because of the results of the Iraq experiment, and because pre-emption goes against values this country has lived by since Woodrow Wilson. But our side won't let it happen because too many people want to keep whining about the invasion in the first place.

48. Thanks BillyBunter. I did stay up to watch the second airing...
he was great, again.

It's funny though, he seems as if he had never ran for office.

Being a politician was never a cloak he wore well, which is why I always liked him and wanted him for my President.
