Local Newspapers Cover Rising Number of Racist Anti-Obama Actions in Small Towns

NEW YORK Many conservative pundits and Republican officeholders on the national stage have reacted to the election of Barack Obama as a promising step forward in the history of race relations and democracy in the U.S. But gaining much less coverage from the national media are local reactions that are far less accepting and positive.

Away from the spotlight, many local newspapers around the country have covered recent incidents of racially-motivated reactions to last week’s election, from flag hung upside down to the dangling of nooses and cross-burnings. As we noted last week, a couple in northern New Jersey who had an Obama sign on their front lawn woke up to find the charred remains of a cross out there. Local residents today announced a "unity march" to protest the still-unsolved incident.

Now come these fresh reports.

<snip>

Also in Michigan, in Midland, a man dressed in full Ku Klux Klan regalia walked around toting a handgun and waving an American flag. Initially denying it, the man eventually admitted to police that the display was a reaction to the Obama victory. “{The man} had a concealed weapon permit and was walking up and down the sidewalk in front of a vehicle dealership while some motorists shouted obscenities at him and others shouted accolades," police told The Saginaw News.

3. The historical event this report reminds me of most is the onset of boxing film censorship
after Jack Johnson's successful heavyweight title bout against Jim Jeffers in 1910.

The unprecedented spectacle of an African-American brutally trouncing a white man led to government censorship of the film footage in 15 states and DC, and ultimately to a Federal ban. A long search for the "Great White Hope" ensued.

8. I'm going to pwn this phrase. I use it at least once a day.....
because there are some stupid, ignorant, rude jackasses taking up space and wasting oxygen around here.

Hubby comes home and says he overheard 2 stupid women talking to each other and whomever else would listen to them.

They just couldn't fathom who gave Barack the right to have his MIL move into the White House. They're afraid that there will be a bunch of blacks running all over the WH like "jungle bunnies".

You just can't make this shit up.

Hubby said he looked their way and said "Get Over It" and walked away.

7. This kind of stuff was going on before the election and will go on after it.
It's just getting a bit more publicity given the current circumstances. There's a core group out there who will not change and they pass it on to their progeny.
