He's been strangely quiet on the whole matter.

1. IMO, no. I think what will doom Romney is his own over-reaching.
This guy is slobbering and howling for the GOP nomination. I think that much willful one-mindedness will be his undoing.

2. I think anything that puts focus on the LDS church is not good for

Romney... While the RW fundie churches may be united with LDS on this issue, it is a fact that the Dobsons, Perkins, Robertsons of the world have great disdain for LDS (as they have historically had for Catholics, though perhaps that animosity may not be as strong today).

The fact that Romney was not pushed onto the VP ticket in lieu of Palin was largely because of his LDS background.... while (as with McCain) pragmatism might allow for him to gain RW support in 2012, he needs Repug moderates and independents, even to win the primaries. I think many of them will have heightened mistrust of him because of the current clear church-state separation overreach by the LDS church. Even some who may be agnostic on Proposition 8, may be persuaded based on LDS' crossing of that important line.

That said, Romney is his own worst enemy on the campaign trail, so I'm not sure any of this will be the determinant in his future career. He will be that determinant.

3. I think it helps him ...

The range of people Romney would ever really appeal to find the sentiment of Prop 8 much to their liking.

By singling out the LDS as the primary mover and shaker behind its passage, it makes the church look more mainstream to that segment of the religious right that may have been turned off by his religious affiliation.

I've actually heard people who never even knew about Prop 8 out here in evangelical fundamentalist freak-show country remark that they never would have expected the LDS to "defend" the institution of marriage like that. LDS stock just went up for them.

4. Prop 8 is the begining
of Mitt's run. And he found tons of Democratic support, lots of phone numbers of like minded haters and that sort of thing. He's pumping up his groudgame.

5. Funny
It will help Romney with the GOP if anything.

Prop 8 will have zero effect on the General election in 2012 (like it had no effect this year).
