I would very easily bet that there will be a much larger Democratic margin this time around. We have a 44-32 percent lead in registration now. It was 43-36 percent four years ago. And the composition of the Democrats is better now, with the old Reaganites gone.

29. Typo -- Guilford.
Hi, ccharles000, I live in Greensboro, too!

I remembered that Kerry squeaked by in 2004, but I had forgotten until I checked a few weeks ago that Bush carried Guilford in 2000. Both, as you point out, AWFULLY close.

Something tells me that Obama will carry Guilford next Tuesday, 52% - 47%, with 1% going to Barr/Nader/Cynthia-whatshername. More predictions:

Forsyth (Winston-Salem): Obama 51%, McCain 48%
Mecklenburg (Charlotte): Obama 51%, McCain 48%
Durham (Durham): Obama 57%, McCain 42%
Orange (Chapel Hill): Obama 55%, McCain 44%
Wake (Raleigh): Obama 52%, McCain 47%
New Hanover (Wilmington): Obama 52%, McCain 47%
Buncombe (Asheville): Obama 55%, McCain 44%

Then there will be a handful of sparsely populated counties in the northeastern part of the state and the odd county or six in the mountains (other than Buncombe) that will go for Obama, too. Note that a big chunk of the state's population (roughly 50%) is in the seven counties (out of 100) listed above. Obama will carry NC 51% to 48%, winning all 15 of North Carolina's electoral votes.

Of course, YMMV.

53. Very cool. I'm going to use this when we relocate.
We moved out here to California 12 years ago thinking anywhere in the state would be pretty cool, but found out we're in one of the reddest ares of the state. I won't make that mistake again. We plan to move back east sometime in the next five years, so I'll keep this for reference. Living surrounded by RWers has pretty much sucked.

BTW, my old home county in Ohio, where I was born and raised, was for Kerry! Hurrah for you, Jefferson County! Maybe you *can* go home again.

66. FYI - There is another helpful resource you might consider when you relocate.
Most larger libraries carry a "Demographics by Zip Code" tome. We used it successfully when we moved to Ct. years ago and found the perfect, diverse community. Our move to the Milwaukee area was not so easy. This area is extremely segregated.

You are right, though - it is hard being surrounded by folks who proudly display their mccain/palin yard signs. We plan to return to the east coast as soon as the market rebounds and we can sell our house. We will definitely refer to this website before making any final decisions.

71. Thanks! Good to know.
I'll make a note to myself. It really is harder than I thought living in a red area. I find myself alienated from my neighbors and actually feeling hateful toward them on bad days. Many of my daughter's friends at school have whacko-right-wing parents who completely snub me, even though our kids are best friends! (I never talk politics to them but they've seen my bumper sticker.) Also, I would like to be more involved in my community but not when it's filled with moronic right-wing evangelicals. The other day I had to bypass my planned trip to the drugstore when I found it surrounded with "Christians" holding "Yes on 8" signs. :puke:

We're also waiting for the market to rebound so we can sell and get outa here.

56. Ugh...In my little oasis of idiots...Anne Arundel Co. Maryland
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 08:59 AM by Kaylee
Kerry 43.1% 103,324
Bush 55.6% 133,231
Other 1.3% 3,112

Gore 44.67% 89,624
Bush 51.93% 104,209

I'm surrounded by McCain/Palin yard signs, but I take comfort that the rest of Maryland will keep it a blue as the deep blue sea.
