Look, If You Had A Heart Attack And You Had A Choice Between A Young State-of-the-Art Heart Surgeon
and some old fart that hasn't kept up with the latest medical techniques, would you choose the old fart just because you saw the young guy talking to someone you don't like?

Let's take it a step further. Let's suppose the old fart was advocating the same remedies that caused you to suffer the heart attack in the first place. Would you go with the old fart because the young guy went to a dinner with somebody you don't approve of?

This guilt by association game doesn't make the slightest bit of sense.

That's why it's an epic fail.

(Can somebody post some fail pictures please)

4. No you don't, not in medicine. The conventional wisdom is with
a legal problem, you want an older wise lawyer. With a medical problem, you want the young guy who has learned and kept up with the latest breakthroughs.

You stick to your old general practitioner for a heart attack? Sometimes you are a bit too contrary for your own good. Go poot on somebody else's thread.

13. I agreed with your analogy, BUT you do want an older GP.
A young heart doctor and a young orthopeadist, but an older GP.

We've got a winner this go 'round.

7. Different issue. For a doc, you don't want the oldest one OR the youngest. But the analogy does

not hold. Hey, FDR was wheelchair bound and dying and he still did amazing things at home and abroad. Then again, so did JFK. Being President and being a surgeon are just not that comparable. But, they don't need to be. Obama is the better candidate for President. I don't give a rat's tail if he can sew, too.

8. I'd want a surgeon who has a craving from new knowledge...
...an openness to new approaches, a progressive awareness of new advances. And, yes, I'd want him to have good, steady hands as well.

On second thought, would the geezer surgeon have a winking "beauty queen" as an assistant? In that case.....

10. I wouldn't want THIS guy:
How I work

JOHN MCCAIN U.S. Senator (R-Arizona)

<snipped>

I read my e-mails, but I don't write any. I'm a Neanderthal--I don't even type. I do have rudimentary capabilities to call up some websites, like the New York Times online, that sort of stuff. No laptop. No PalmPilot. I prefer my schedule on notecards, which I keep in my jacket pocket. But my wife has enormous capability. Whenever I want something I ask her to do it. She's just a wizard. She even does my boarding passes--people can do that now. When we go to the movies, she gets the tickets ahead of time. It's incredible.

My most valuable resource is my chief of staff and writing partner, Mark Salter. We've been together for 17 years. I cannot imagine my professional life without him. <snipped>

It's the perfect partnership, with him doing most of the work.

11. The analogy does not work...
as Obama could not really be considered a state of the art heart surgeon. Maybe a recent resident. There are plenty of analogies that would work with young and modern vs old and rigid, but not this one. We are being asked to have a lot of faith in Obama because of what he represents, the experience factor is quite low compared to McCain. Come on, he has the same elected office as McCain and McCain has been there how much longer?

Obama has inspired us to have faith in what he can do, what he has the potential to accomplish. If I was voting on accomplishments, I would have to vote McCain. I am voting on Hope and Change and that is not what I get from McCain.

Now in your analogy, I do not choose my doctors on hope and change and I would choose the older doctor over the new one.

your post really summed up the truth about this election...

We are electing a best friend. We are electing a new CEO of America to get us out of this mess we are in.

14. Totally off-base analogy
As you frame it, of course anyone would want the better surgeon when compared to the older guy who hasn't kept up. DUH! LOL

Also, associations don't matter at all on the issue of performing heart surgery. It's a matter of technique and skill, not philosophy. Whereas in choosing a leader, philosophy does matter. Of course the Ayers thing is silly. Just saying that I do think CLOSE associations are important when evaluating a person.

16. Sorry, your analogy doesn't quite work........
Most MDs have retired when reaching McCain's age or have become consultants - valued cosultants, if only for their wealth of experience regarding medical situations. Same with lawyers and other professionals.

And BTW, if you are having a heart attack, you ain't got time to make a "choice". You get the attending staff that's available.

You should watch some House episodes. And maybe some other MD programs where you will see a number of "old farts" advising the young state of the art medical staff.

Signed:

An old fart.
