Brilliant as always, McCain uses Ivory soap ad to deny racism will affect the vote...

Yeah, that's a good plan. Americans aren't racists, because they're 99 and 44/100s percent Ivory pure. That should put this issue to bed. I assume if Hillary had won, he'd be using Irish Spring to deny sexism as a voting factor. ("Manly yes, but I like it too.")

Look, there's racism in America — we all know that," the Republican hopeful told CNN's "Larry King Live" in a taped interview set to air Wednesday evening.

"But I am totally convinced that 99 and forty-four-one-hundredths percent of Americans are going to make the decision based on who is best to lead this country," he continued.

1. I have a hard time believing it's not purposeful.

4. To give him the benefit of the doubt, it predates political correctness
It even predates discussion of racial equality. Much like McCain himself.

He heard it on the radio when he listened to the Lone Ranger or whatever. He saw it in ads in the Saturday Evening Post.

In fact you must be pretty old to remember it yourself. I know I am.

He's an old guy with old references, and if it is calculated he will say it more than once, because he has to memorize talking points. But this expression was once part of the popular culture, a way of saying "virtually all," and I just don't think his tired old brain registers it as anything else.

5. I wasn't interpreting intent -- just the usual lack of judicious word choice...

In spite of all that's gone on during this campaign, I don't see McCain as a racist. And, at the risk of annoying some folks, I think this campaign would have been even more sleazy if any other Republican from the primaries had won instead of McCain.

That said, McCain is clearly not above exploiting racial division and racial fears to get votes. (Granted, I'm sure he's resisting an extreme amount of daily pressure to take things further.) Palin seems to enjoy it.

6. PS Yeah, I'm old. But that ad predates me by a little, at least...

I heard it referenced by my parents as a child, and somewhere along the way saw it replayed as an oldie.

Still, yeah, I'm no spring chicken.

7. Oh, please. That pri*k is praying that racism affects the vote, or he would not be trying so
hard to sell Obama as an exotic" mega-mystery candidate.

"Is Obama a black supremicist, a radical jihadist terrorist? We just can not ever be entirely sure, can we, voters?"

That's been his message and Palin's for a long time.

I've got his Ivory soap right here and I'd like to wash out his racist mouth with it.
