Poll question: Who is the current leader of the Democratic Party?
Edited on Thu Oct-30-08 01:51 AM by Liberal_in_LA
Typically when the party holds the white house, the president is considered the leader of the party. After Clinton left office, with his high popularity, he was considered the leader of the dems for years.

Who is now the Dem leader? Who is the most influential Dem?

1. This must be a trick question, but I'm not getting it....
Despite what Clinton supporters who quibble over verbiage might say, it's been Obama's party since he beat Clinton.

9. it's still a stupid question. sorry. Obama is the nominee and
therefore the leader of the party. that's the way it always worked. duh. And Clinton was also relatively young when he was the nominee. Grab a clue.

10. Are Pelosi, Clinton, or Reid odds-on favourite to win the Presidency next week?
Have Pelosi, Clinton or Reid led an effort that's remade the electoral map? Hmmm?

No?

Didn't think so.

Stupid question.

13. So? They're morons.
The President is the leader of the party. Obama will, unless something dramatic and unforeseen happens, probably be the next president. Therefore, he is the leader of the party. QED.

14. Do you consider Bush to be the current leader of the GOP? The most influential member of GOP?
I think not!

17. Bush is an unpopular lame duck; bad comparison...McCain is the current GOP leader.
And as far as that goes, it's just absurdist to try to argue that at the present juncture there IS any nationally more influential Democrat than Barack Obama. Although you seem, for whatever reason, determined to do just that.

20. Look, I'm not sure what you are up to here
but the nominee for President is the official Head of the Party. John McCain is the current head of the Republicans and Barack Obama is the current head of the Democrats. Been that way since each accepted the nominations at their respective conventions.

And, when one of them loses (and it's a fair bet right now that's John McCain), it will be up to the party to stick with him or choose another "Head of the Party". Probably will go to the minority leader in the Senate, but that's up to a committee. Could go to an ex-President or House member or whatever. That's up to them.

29. It's obvious from the various stmts the OP made in this thread
that he or she is doubtful that Obama is "old enough" or "experienced enough" to be the current head of the party.

However, Obama IS the current Head of the Party, and will (I believe) hold this title for nearly 8 more years.

Anyone paying attention would know that (there have been stories written and statements made when Obama was made head of the party).

So I don't know what the OP is up to with this line of questioning or reasoning.

Hence my reluctance to simply let it slide (plus, there have been a lot of disruption here tonight from "trolls", not that I'm making any accusation in that line but I feel that the thread should die after the OP got the answer they were looking for, namely that Barack Obama is the current head of the Democratic Party).

27. Not that fast, these meetings go on for some time
in fact, Repuke power brokers just had one... and the name they bandied about was Palin.

I think that's way too early, and cooler (and sane) heads will prevail. If McConnell survives the election, I'm guessing that he will be in the mix (providing he doesn't want to run for President).

It doesn't do (usually) for either a failed nominee (Gore, Kerry) or a future nominee to be given the title as well as any power that comes from it (which, right now, is actually quite small... however, Barack DID assert his power and demanded that in his party, lobbyist and PAC money would not be welcome for the party... not including individuals running for office as Democrats I believe).

Sometimes the head of the party and the Chairperson are one and the same. But usually the "head" is a sitting politician and the "Chairperson" is someone who is no longer in office or never ran for office.

28. WE THE PEOPLE are leading the Democratic Party at the moment. "Dem leaders" are playing catch-up.
The Obama Bus left the station unexpectedly, and
lots of well-known Democrats had to run after it.

35. When it popped into my head, I thought it was a good one-liner...but as I typed it...
...I realized that it held a lot more TRUTH than I
had initially understood.

Obama came out of left field and surprised EVERYONE
when he won the Dem Primary.

The Repubs had spent 4 years getting ready to run against Hillary,
and the Dems had spent years getting ready to support a well-known Dem
who was probably gonna be Hillary.

Obama? Oh WHAT-a? This guy caught EVERYONE on both sides napping,
and he won the nomination by APPEALING TO VOTERS.

The power-brokers of both parties who expected this election
to be a standard, members-only chess match amongst themselves
were completely unprepared for this.

To steal a phrase from my friend Russ, this "Obama" thing was so unexpected
that the folks who PLANNED the 2008 election script don't know whether to shit or go blind.

Me, as a practicing Discordian...this is the SIGN I've been looking for.
