Remember, just ONE word! Something that symbolises what being a Democrat means to you, that kind of thing.....

29. Egalitarianism
The concept that our social, political, economic and cultural systems should be as open and protective as possible. Hillary CLinton summed it up well:

"To fight for an America defined by deep and meaningful equality - from civil rights to labor rights, from women's rights to gay rights, from ending discrimination to promoting unionization to providing help for the most important job there is: caring for our families. To help every child live up to his or her God-given potential."

38. "pornography" or "sodomy"
I'm a strong civil-libertarian and privacy right advocate. The Democratic Party doesn't care much about civil liberties, but they care more than the pugs. So I'm a Dem, always have been, and always will be until such time as the Republican Party becomes stronger on civil liberties than we are. (Probably not in my lifetime.)

And the reason I chose the words pornography and sodomy is that liberties and rights are defended only on the unpopular edge. (Not that pornography and sodomy are unpopular in practice, but they are unpopular words.)

Because I cannot want for myself what I do not want for others.

The Democratic Party is the party of the Golden Rule. The Republican Party is the party of selfishness and greed.

Hope that we can always strive for a more perfect Union.

Hope that tomorrow will be better than today.

Hope that we will care for the weakest among us and help them to be strong too.

Hope that I and we can one day be better as people than we have been before.

Hope that every person will be equal, even as I understand we are all different.

Hope that we as a people will once again dream big dreams.

Hope that we can be more than the simple sum of our parts.

Hope that opportunity will grow for all of us.

Hope in a people that have unlimited possibilities.

Hope that we can be true and good stewards of our world.

Hope that we will explore the stars.

Hope that good things, not yet hoped for will come true.

90. Epistemology
Its not what you know its how do you know.

Republicans had become the party of myth - sacred political and religious myths that have no basis in fact. Everytime they say the phrase 'Our founding fathers . . ' what ever follows after that is 100% wrong. Our founding fathers were not capitalists (excepte Hamilton - the only founding father still around in 1830 when capitalism was formulated as an organizing concept. Our founding fathers were not evangelicals, fundamentalists nor biblical literalists, all concepts of the late 19th and 20th century.

Democrats base their policies on reality and look for solutions based on fact and when possible science. Government should seek the soloution that is not bigger, smaller or ideological but uses its power to find the best solution for the greater good.

Definition of epistemology:

Epistemology (from Greek επιστήμη - episteme, "knowledge" + λόγος, "logos") or theory of knowledge is a branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge.<1> The term was introduced into English by the Scottish philosopher James Frederick Ferrier (1808–1864).<2>

Much of the debate in this field has focused on analyzing the nature of knowledge and how it relates to similar notions such as truth, belief, and justification. It also deals with the means of production of knowledge, as well as skepticism about different knowledge claims. In other words, epistemology primarily addresses the following questions: "What is knowledge?", "How is knowledge acquired?", "What do people know?", "How do we know what we know?"

105. Bush.
I had grown up in a Republican household, so that's the type of view I grew up with.

But when Bush took office, I was just entering into my 20's. I still wasn't interested in politics. It wasn't up until Bush started bringing up the gay marriage thing that I got turned off, then after that, it was just a series of fuck-ups from him. I became more interested in politics, and decided that this was what Republicans were, so I would not consider myself one of them. Needless to say, I had always had Democratic ideals, I just had considered myself a Republican since that's what was around me.

I hadn't registered to vote in 2004, then really started getting excited and motivated and tried to register, but found out my state makes it so you have to register well in advance. So, unfortunately I never got to cast a vote against Bush. But I did vote in the 2006 elections, I voted in the Democratic primary, and I plan to vote this Tuesday!

I will look at Republicans with spite and anger, until the day the Democrats screw this country up as badly as the Republicans did. I certainly hope that never happens.

The Arapaho way of life. Nóno'éinííne'etíít stresses how our lives are interconnected and, to me, the Democratic Party principles encompasses this philosophy too.

204. Keynes.
As in John Maynard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keynesian_economics

Economies are much more fair productive when government revenue and spending are designed to run surpluses in good times and deficits in bad times, making sure that those at the bottom of the economic heap have enough for essentials.

210. Compassion (bodhicitta)
The development of compassion is a cornerstone (if not the cornerstone) of Buddhism.

Every human being has the same potential for compassion; the only question is whether we really take any care of that potential, and develop and implement it in our daily life. My hope is that more and more people will realise the value of compassion, and so follow the path of altruism.

Tenzin Gyatso (The current Dalai Lama)

Chosing to support the Democratic Party and its ideals is the best I can do with that in American politics.

227. "...even if there will be those who abuse the system."
Democrats think it's better to suffer a little abuse than to let anyone starve. Republicans would rather people starve than let anybody get their money.

223. Vey hard, but I guess "community" comes closest.
The idea that we're all in this together, and should help each other. Republicans are very "fuck you buddy, I got mine".

"Progress" would be a very close second. Republicans want to live in the past.
