That Day
This is something that's been on my mind for awhile...thought I'd put it into words.

That Day

On November 4th, Barack Obama will be elected as President of the United States. He will have earned this right as he has captivated the hearts, minds, and souls of the majority of the country. Many Americans now have a renewed sense of confidence in the political process, as well as the belief that things can and will change.

However, the day I’m talking is not November 4th, 2008. It is August 29, 2005. This is the day that the Republican Party and the rest of the country began to go its separate ways.

That Day.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most intense cyclones on record. It reached Category 5 status, and was on a beeline to devastate the city of New Orleans as well as coastal areas of Mississippi and Alabama. As the hurricane made landfall, our Republican president and his cronies responded with the most pathetic rescue effort in the history of the United States.

That Day.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans (mostly African-American) were referred to, and treated as second class citizens.

That Day.

George Bush and John McCain blew out birthday candles while the hopes and dreams of many were extinguished forever.

That Day.

America’s stature as the ultimate superpower was revoked. Insufficient funds. No cashe your checke…however, you want to say it…we were exposed.

That Day.

People died.

That Day.

Dreams died.

That Day.

Forty percent of the Louisiana National Guard was fighting in a life and death struggle…that is a life and death struggle in Iraq. While citizens across the state were holding on to life by a thread, and property was being destroyed, one of the most valuable resources for assistance was busy participating in the most unjust war in American history.

That Day.

Our Republican President refused offers of help from around the globe, even though boats, planes, helicopters, and other equipment were sorely needed.

That Day.

Many people were anointed as heroes, not because they used the tools allocated from the Republican led rescue effort, but because they were able to persevere and succeed in spite of the Republican lack of effort.

That Day.

The Republican Party any smidge of credibility, and they also lost this election.

That Day.

Now we are on the precipice of a new frontier. It is 2008 and the Republican Party wants to fool us and act like the party of change. Sarah Palin is supposedly going to advocate for special needs children. I’m not buying it. Where in the hell where the Republicans when the poor souls that were impacted by Katrina had a “special need”!?

We lost thousands of lives because of Katrina, but the Republican Party officially lost their soul on…That Day.

1. That day...
"Hundreds of thousands of Americans (mostly African-American) were referred to, and treated as second class citizens."

Even second class citizens usually get better treatment than the total, callous disregard shown the victims that day and the days that followed. Even our convicted felons get food and shelter. These people were left to fend for themselves with nothing, to die and to rot, all because they weren't part of Bush/Cheney/Rove's version of America.

As far as I'm concerned, the blame for the death and suffering of the people of New Orleans (as well as what happens in Iraq) rests squarely upon the shoulders of George W. Bush.

GREAT post, btw. K&R
