Any recomendations if I have a problem voting?
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 12:47 PM by dem629
I have moved just recently, and got my DL renewed with the new address which does not match my address on the voter registration rolls. There was not time to make the deadline on address changes. Now I'm getting worried about getting to the polling place and being turned away. I do not want to call any "official" for an answer, for fear of raising a flag about this.

I live in SC, so yeah, I know someone will say McCain is going to win anyway, but I don't accept that. This is why we vote, and I know Barack needs every vote he can get in a red state like this.

1. Don't leave the polling place without, at least, casting a HAVA provisional ballot

6. Might be better than nothing (IF I have a problem voting) but aren't those risky, too?

9. Risky? Oh yeah.
But better than nothing.

Provide as much identifying info as you can to support your registration's validity.

2. fill out change of address form, deliver to County registrar's office
here's the official SC website and apparently you cannot do this online. Hope this helps you.

13. too late to mail, not too late to just get down to registrar's office
and don't let them tell you any different. Just get down there and do it post haste!

3. Demand a normal ballot. DO NOT accept a provisional ballot. Make noise
if they say you have to vote on a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots are NEVER counted.

5. Take this phone number with you
If you’re wrongfully turned away from the polls or denied the right to register to vote, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE (or 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA), a hotline run by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law. They can help you out.

7. In my state, you are allowed to vote at your old address,
Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 12:54 PM by crispini
even if you have moved, for up to two years. You need to go online or call your county elections office and verify where your voter registration is and doublecheck on your voter registration status. Then you should be able to vote a normal ballot at your old polling place.

BUT, there is no reason why you should not call an "official" for an answer. That will save you some heartache on election day and they should not flag you. You need to call them because rules and laws vary from state to state and county to county. Asking for advice on DU, you will get dozens of answers and not all of them will be correct.

Do not vote a provisional ballot unless you cannot avoid it. They are the "ballot of last resort" and rarely count.

14. Just got off duty in OH on voter protection line. Here is what I would tell an Ohio
voter (states have different laws).

You can go into an early voting location and make the correction to the registration rolls and vote on a regular ballot. If you wait to election day, you will be forced to vote on a provisional ballot, which will not be counted on election night. You will have to go to your county BOE to make the correction in order for your provisional ballot to be counted.
