Obama Presidency = my rightwing FIL bought two guns!!!
I try to keep my distance from my inlaws...No real problems, but I just prefer to live and stay away from family.

He is 66, MIL is 65...Religous, lower middle class, live in eastern Washington state...Nothing interesting about them, but they have always voted republicans...They visit us in Florida about once a year...Last year he told me there is no way he will vote for McCain if nominated. The year before, MIL and I got into it over Bush and his war, she said the Lord wanted the war...etc. I lost it, she cried...But whatever.

My wife who is level headed, very liberal...etc. talks to her parents once a week...Tried to talk to them about Obama, they said they will only vote for a Republican...Fine, did not expect anything different from them.

But then this past Sunday, he told her it looks like Obama is going to win, he bought a riffle and handgun -My wife was stunned, asked him why? He said things are not going to be good in this country and he wanted to make sure he can protect himself...etc. This is an older guy, never owned a gun in his life and he did not have the money to buy them, he said he put it on his credit card...

We are so disappointed to hear this...

1. That's pretty far out.
What on earth does he think is going to happen? Will it be as bad as Y2K? And, may I assume that this person is a dedicated viewer of Fox "News"?

9. No cable, but loves Rush and Hannity...I think many rightwingers are experiencing
Cognitive Dissonance over a potential Obama administration...etc.

16. NRA trying to scare people? Good. Then when Obama doesn't take people's guns away, their argument
will be less effective next time.

17. Hasn't stopped them every time a Democrat runs for office so far.
They have tons of money and make more by scaring people that any discussion of gun control will mean that all people will have all guns removed forever.

6. Republican: the party of FEAR.
Sad to see how they scare so many folks needlessly.

7. Sounds like a weirdo. What, exactly, is he afraid of?
Specifically, what terrible thing will happen in an Obama presidency that would make him need a gun? I bet he couldn't tell you if asked.

10. You should have asked him what he's protecting himself from.
Lower taxes? Better health care? An improved economy? Respect from the rest of the world?

He spends way too much time listening to wingnuts on the radio and tv. Rightwingers are the most ignorant people on the planet.

18. Obama has not said he would veto a bill to renew the assault weapons ban and that bothers many of
the 80+ million gun owners.

Such a bill as H.R. 1022 could ban most popular semiautomatic firearms.

A simple promise by Obama to veto any attempt to renew the AWB would eliminate that issue.
