GOP unity yields to dissenters of all stripes
BOSTON – The Republican Party was the model of unity leaving its national convention barely two months ago. But no more.

Displaying a fracture that stands to become a clean break if John McCain loses the election next week, Republicans of all stripes and stature have broken with their party's nominee and are not only supporting Democrat Barack Obama, but trashing the GOP in the process.

1. Prediction: the party will splinter into camp Romney and camp Mooseburgers
Moderates will back Romney and crazy fundies will back Mooseburgers.

That is all.

3. Who else do they have?
I was going to dispute the Romney part of your equation, but there really isn't anyone else for that spot, is there? Lieberman?

4. Nope, he's too old. Romney is looking towards 2012 just like Palin is and this will be
a civil war of the two ideologies in the party. Fundies can't/won't support a Mormon and they are in love with Palin. More centrist republicans can't stand Palin and are counting on Romney in 2012.

10. I think tere are 3 very different groups in the Republican Party.
The traditional Paleocon intellectuals, as personified by W.F. Buckley *& George Will; the Chicago School (Straussian neocons), and the Mooseburgers. The Big $$ people were traditionally aligned with the Paleocons (as are the libertarians), but some money people--the Empire Builders (big oil, the Military-Industrialists) have fallen in with the Neocons. The Mooseburgers consist of two classes: The shameless psychopathic authoritarian string-pullers like Pat Robertson and the poor, deluded masses who turned their souls over to the Dobsons and Robertsons, and who provide the votes, cannon-fodder and (monstly) small donations that are the foundation of the whole shebang.

It will be very interesting to see where the fault lines are, and how it all shatters under stress.

2. yet another republican I know said they will not vote for McCain
because of Palin. He said that she's a joke, and all she needs is a cheerleader's outfit.

9. Good news for us, but...
Damn, there goes the idea a great Halloween outfit. I could do the hair, glasses and even the Minnesota accent...but I bet I can't scrounge up a red/white/blue cheerleader outfit with GOP emblazoned across the front by Friday. It would go over big in my Democratic-stronghold neighborhood (Obama/Biden signs outnumber the GOP about 20 to 1). Too bad. :-(

5. It will be fun to watch
Romney seems to be leading the Almighty Dollar faction. Barbie Doll and Huckabee should fight it out for the Fundy Wacko faction.

11. I hope it splits into Conservative and Fundie
I've never understood how the Evangelicals and Corporations got in bed together. Maybe they should have had Buddy Jesus in a business suit as their mascot.
