What's with the crepe hangers here?
crepe hanger: a person of consistently pessimistic outlook (from the use of black crepe for the manufacture of ladies’ mourning dresses, men’s hat bands and arm bands, and funeral wreaths)

In days of old when the dead were laid out in the parlour of the family home, people, either out of respect or superstition, draped all the mirrors and windows of the house with black crepe. Professional "funeral" operators would begin to prepare for this ahead of time as they noted that there were local people nearing death's door. This gave birth to the term, "crepe hanger" to people who are compulsive worriers, anxious about things that have not yet happened. This "tradition" also gave birth to the use of black crepe for the manufacture of ladies’ mourning dresses, men’s hat bands and arm bands, and funeral wreaths.

OK, I understand that many of us are superstitious.
I am, a little bit.
So I'm not predicting a landslide.
But what's with all the postings here about 'October surprises', 'Rovian Reverses', and the weird polls that show 'tightening', 'Obama slipping', etc.?
And every night the MSM shows 8-12 point Obama lead with the average of polls.

I prefer to remain optimistic while still working to roll up the score.
Let's not 'out-psyche' ourselves, OK?
:-)

2. It's protective . . like warding off the evil eye . .
2004 was very very painful.

We will all throw off every remaining shred of crepe on Jan 20 and dance naked in the streets

3. Dance naked in the streets? OK, I will if you will.
But it won't be pretty.

4. if we'd been at +2% or -2% until yesterday, we'd be ECSTATIC about the current numbers
Now we're in "do I dare to really believe" mode--protecting our tender psyches after having been burned by hope so many times--so we won't let ourselves fully be happy until McCain opens up one of his speeches with "You win. I quit."

7. We've just been shot down so many times in the past.
It's very hard to remain optimistic and not to over-analyze and hence, over-react to any changes in the landscape. It's something like this:

I KNOW WE'LL WIN!!!!

I'm positive we'll win!

I'm pretty sure we'll win!

Let's hope we win!

My fingers are crossed we'll win!

Oh, please, let us win.

Do you think we can win?

Rinse and repeat that process for every new poll or news story...LOL
