3. Problem was that
The Republicans were split in three pieces for the primaries (McCain (war hawks), Romney (fiscal conservatives) and Huckabee (wackos)).

And they remain split in three.

And they shall remain split in three.

Remains to be seen if Dems can pick off the fiscal conservatives. Or even want to.

4. not a lot of fiscal conservatives out there...
that want to keep spending $10b a month in Iraq. Even if they bemoan other spending poroposals by Obama, at least it is money spent domestically.

14. there are very few real fiscal conservatives. i think fiscal conservatives is the excuse they give
to cover up other issues (racism, homophobia etc). if one is true fiscal conservative, one would bother to see which party spends public money conservatively or like drunken sailors.

15. Actually, Rudy had the war hawks. McCain was the only one they could agree on.
I really do think that McCain was the best choice of those running they could have picked.

13. Huckabee
He's the only one of them who had a ghost of a chance.

Religious guy.
No family scandals.
Interesting and thoughtful.
Funny.
Southerner.
Good speaker.
No meaningful connection to Bush of to the problems of Bush's tenure.

16. Yup. Huckabee is the only Republican that could win
And that would actually be an interesting race.

Huckabee is wrong about... well, almost everything... but he has an integrity the others don't. His line "I think as a country we're better than punishing children for what their parents did" was exactly what needed to be said about immigration.

Beyond Huckabee himself, that model of socially conservative and fiscally moderate is probably a winning combination in this country right now.
