ABC News: McCain Camp sources say Palin has developed quite a reputation for shopping on the trail

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/10/ooooooh-barracu.html

<snip>

And plenty of people on the McCain campaign are mystified as to how the $150,000 charges were racked up.

Moreover, McCain campaign sources say, Palin has developed quite a reputation on the campaign trail for shopping.

During this controversy, McCain insiders were appalled to read a blog account from Nevada noting that the day before Palin held an event in Reno, “Palin's assistant stopped in at the Ann Taylor at the Summit Sierra Mall and bought the skirt suit that she wore during to her speech Tuesday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. ‘She bought a short, three-quarter sleeve jacket, a skirt and a couple other items,’ store manager Suzette Ludden said.”

All the while, Palin herself has given the wardrobe story more media coverage by denying that she had anything to do with it.

"It is so nice to be back here in the Sunshine State and quite warm which I love and grabbed a jacket this morning to put on not realizing how warm it would be,” she said in Florida. “My own jacket, yes…"

“This whole thing with the wardrobe you know I have tried to just ignore it because it is so ridiculous,” she continued. “Those clothes they are not my property, just like the lighting and the staging and everything else that the RNC purchased. I am not taking them with me, I'm back to wearing my own clothes from my favorite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska.”

At McCain HQ, senior aides rolled their eyes, unable to believe that Palin was continuing to give the story more airtime.

1. Wait, I thought it was consignment shops in the real America, not Ann Taylor in a city!

Obama staffers know, for the most part at least, when to keep their mouths shut...I can't remember any stories about in fighting from them. Must be the "no assholes allowed" rule.

5. Someone should ask these shopkeepers...
How she paid for the clothes. It would be interesting to see if she used her own credit card (and later received reimbursement), or an RNC card.

This one simple issue brings to light the obvious fact that nothing is as it appears.

What a dumbass she is!

22. Palin said ‘I want to be president.’ Maybe she's dreaming of ...
running in 2012. I don't think she's trying at all now to help McCain win.

23. It reminds me of an episode of Married, With Children
The one where Al goes to England where he's summoned by a town that has an eternal cloud over it because of something a Bundy ancestor did in the distant past. The citizens of the town are so anxious to get Al to help them rid themselves of the cloud that they regretfully have to indulge every Bundy whim, one of which involves a monumental shopping spree by the entire family in London's most exclusive boutiques where Peggy and Kelly go wild.

27. “Those clothes they are not my property"
She keeps saying this and I think I know the reason. In an article last week about the legality of spending RNC money on clothes the conclusion was that it was legal (barely) BUT she would have to pay TAXES on this $150,000 "gift." Also, the article said that if the clothes were donated to charity, she could claim this as a deduction but not for anywhere near the purchase price. I think that's why she keeps reiterating that they aren't her clothes. She's saying the RNC didn't give them to her-they lent them to her. I'd be curious to know how the IRS views this new strategy.

That fact that she keeps saying this shows just how strong her instinct is for self-preservation. They've told her to drop the clothes talk but she wants to make sure her ass if covered with the IRS-even if her continued obsession with the subject hurts the campaign.

28. I think you're giving her too much credit.
It's now coming out that she and her personal assistant purchased the clothes herself. Therefore, her continued statements that she "didn't know anything about them" and that "most of them are still in the belly of the plane" are just flat-out lies.

I think that she is as crooked as Dick Nixon and that eventually she will be convicted of far worse than Ted Stevens.

29. Oh, I think she's crooked, too.
I think the "These clothes are not my property" meme is a form of tax-evasion on her part.

32. palin must have missed the part where ted stevens
was found guilty for claiming he didn't "own" many of the gifts of furniture he's been "using" for the past few years. they were "borrowed" or "lent" to him.

Yeah, that worked out super for the old tedster. Keep it up, Palin. You're dumber than you sound...and boy, that's dumb.

35.  I'd like nothing more than a $1000 gift certicate
From Coldwater Creek, but then I don't go all folksy pretending I make my family's mukluks out of moose I kill and skin myself.

If Ms. Palin needs to indulge in a little Retail Therapy to ease the stress of campaigning, fine. If she's bargain hunting, that can be a lot less expensive than Cindy's drug habit. But pricey boutique items send the wrong message - oh hell, in her case it's probably the right message: Marie Antoinette, move over!

I'm not defending palan. But I'd really rather hear about her politics than her personal life.

Much more damage could be done if people knew of her fundamentalist right-wing beliefs.
