By now you probably know that NC Early Voting has been huge. Over 1.4 million people have voted early--more than voted early in 04 already--and with five days left. Yesterday alone saw 200K-plus vote.
And here's how the composition looks (note all the favorable demographics):
by GENDER: most voters (56.3%) have been women
by PARTY ID: most voters have been Democrats (54.6%)
by RACE: almost exactly the SAME NUMBER OF AFRICAN AMERICANS (28.1%) have voted AS REPUBLICANS (28.1%)
Survey USA fixed Obama's lead in actual votes already cast at 23% as of last week. PPP put it at 28% as of two days ago.
Now...the even better news. Using Rasmussen's numbers for percentages of support by party affiliation (and taking a further step to the conservative side), the following numbers of registered Obama supporters and McCain supporters remain in the pool as of the opening of the polls this morning:
Obama: 2,438,551
McCain: 2,367,334
In short, if party I.D. holds as an indicator of percentages of support, BARACK OBAMA still has more registered supporters left to vote for him. Now, all the likely voter polls in this state are predicting a squeaker (McCain +1, Obama +1, Obama +4, and a tie in the last four), so either a) those polls are making terrible assumptions, or b) many registered Obama supporters actually don't plan to vote.
One thing is certain: with a lead around 25% (and those votes are BANKED) with almost 1/4 of all registered votes in, if we turn out our people the rest of the way, NC is BLUE.
And guess who's coming to Raleigh tomorrow? (See you there, NC supporters.)
