RE: Obama losing the popular vote...
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 11:29 AM by vi5
I see a lot of people on here throwing this out there as a possibility, even if they think he'll win the election but I'm not sure what the reasoning/thinking is. I'm not saying we can't still lose or win this thing the way elections are lost or won, which is the electoral college. No doubt about that.

But given that Gore WON the popular vote, and given that Kerry was only a small percentage away on the popular vote, how is it possible that Obama who is running the same in the Gore and Kerry states, and almost even or even only a few points behind in some of the Bush states and even AHEAD in some of the Bush states could lose the popular vote? I mean I know anything is POSSIBLE but why do some people on here think it's a likely or even probably result?

Again, I'm not saying he can't still lose it in the electoral college but what is the thinking behind people saying he can lose the popular vote. I think if anything it's popular vote win/electoral loss or a solid sweep of both.

Did I miss something on this subject?

Edited: And please don't say Diebold, suprression, etc. I know those are possibilities but I'm looking for something a little different/more than that by way of explanation.

1. huh? I have yet to see anyone even hint that he'd lose the popular vote.

He's ahead nicely in all the national polls.

Is Tuesday "funny hat day"? Cuz there have been some very strange threads started this morning.

2. I've seen it suggested several times in the past couple weeks.
It might not be likely, but people are bringing it up. Surprised you haven't noticed.

3. Thanks.....
I have too (obviously which is why I posted what I did) but sadly I don't have links. Although there is one "prediction" thread now that has someone suggesting that in it.

11. None of us can read every thread or post here, so yes it has been hinted and suggested
that Obama might win the electoral vote but lose the popular vote. I don't see that as even a remote possibility.

4. John King said last week that the McCain camp was conceding the popular vote
They know that their path to victory does not include a popular vote victory.

5. It is very unlikely that Obama would win the electoral vote and not win the popular vote
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com puts the chance of that at 1.25%

6. Nate Silver gives McCain a 3.71% chance of winning the popular vote
That's not much of a chance.

9. Sounds about right. I don't worry about that much.
It seems unlikely.

8. WTF
I expect 140+ million votes and Obama winning by 6-7 points... That's 8-10 million margin nationally...

10. Sorry pal, have to include bits of election manipulation here and there.
Republicans have been actively using their various techniques--

purging voter rolls

robocalls and fliers misdirecting voters

some vote flipping programs

uneven distribution of voting machines

ETCETERA

So we will need our AVALANCHE to get our landslide.

And we've caught some of the Republican attempts to suppress Democratic vote totals but not all of them.

So there will be all kinds of discrepancies.

And so I am very glad Obama has strong leads in his states that will make it tough to outright steal the whole election.
