"I'm voting for Obama" - "Why?" - "Because McCain's going to lose!"
I stopped in for breakfast yesterday at a local restaurant and was seated next to a booth of four women. One of them was telling the others about a friend who was a long-time McCain supporter. Well, she said that recently her friend changed her mind and announced she was voting for Barack Obama.

"Why?" she was asked, "You've been such a supporter for McCain, why did you switch to Obama?"

"Because McCain's going to lose!" came the reply. The table erupted with laughter.

I guess for no other reason, you should at least vote for the winner!

3. Time and again, the number one reason given in exit polling for whom the voter chose:
"I thought they were going to win"

5. That might be a factor if Obama holds a clear lead in the polls on election day.
Some undecideds and McCain leaners will just vote for the winner.

7. I'll take bandwagon votes!
Unlike the Bradley Effect, the Bandwagon Effect is very real and scientifically observable.

And it's in our favor!

I'll take it!

12. This is something I've read about, but to see it playing out before my eyes is disturbing.

Really? We vote because we think someone may win and not on the political philosophies that inform the individuals running for office? Amazing stuff. Maybe Democracy is a doomed experiment after all.

9. People like to vote for a winner.
There may be a lot of people switching simply for that reason next Tuesday.

10. Yep, yep, yep
That's why this lead in the polls is a good things. Real undecided might vote for Obama because they want to vote for the winner. People like to say they were right.

14. Right!
My wife has been saying this for months (she's so smart!): people like to vote with the winner. For undecided voters, that is as good a reason as any.

22. Plus, why wait in line for 6 hours to vote for a guy you think is going to lose and who you don't
like very much anyway. I think that may happen some on election day. The enthusiasm gap matters.

13. I love it!
Saw a poll this morning on Yahoo showing Obama WAY ahead in projected electoral votes. That kind of thing can only help. People like to be part of the winning team, and if that's their only criterion, I'll take it. Quite by accident they'll end up voting for their own best interests, in any case!

15. Apparently she has democracy confused with gambling
Or if she was eating with Bob Dylan, he could have told her:

You just want to be on
The side that's winning
...
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

18. actually not new, it's called the bandwagon effect. It's what low information voters do at the end
and this time it might help the dems.

23. Actually, I have been experiencing this same phenomenon in Indiana while canvassing.
I've been finding a lot of white male voters who watch a lot of Faux, believe Obama is a Muslim and refuse my literature or polling place info because they say they are already voting for Obama.

Why? In the words of one guy, "he's a sorry-ass piece of $hit loser."
