Illegal purges... how many? I know of 20K in CO, and 50K in GA...

how many other states conducted illegal purges of their voter rolls?

Apparently MI did this as well. I missed the article below when it came out.

States’ Actions to Block Voters Appear Illegal
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/09/us/politics/09voting.html

The six swing states seem to be in violation of federal law in two ways. Michigan and Colorado are removing voters from the rolls within 90 days of a federal election, which is not allowed except when voters die, notify the authorities that they have moved out of state, or have been declared unfit to vote.

Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio seem to be improperly using Social Security data to verify registration applications for new voters.

In addition to the six swing states, three more states appear to be violating federal law. Alabama and Georgia seem to be improperly using Social Security information to screen registration applications from new voters. And Louisiana appears to have removed thousands of voters after the federal deadline for taking such action.

1. GA purge overturned by courts

3. Not so encouraging...
The court ruling will affect about 4,500 people in Georgia who had been "flagged" by the new voter verification system and faced being denied a chance to vote Nov. 4 because their citizenship was questioned.

It could also affect more than 50,000 other registered Georgia voters also flagged by the new system because of mismatches in their personal identification information, such as discrepancies in addresses.

(snip)

"We are very pleased that the court agreed with our legal position that the state violated the Voting Rights Act," said Elise Shore, a lawyer with one of the civil right groups who brought the lawsuit.

Shore said the ruling applies to the 4,500 Georgians that were flagged for citizenship reasons and she was uncertain whether it applied to the some 50,000 others that were flagged for other reasons.

2. Kick and repeat question: how many early voters are being turned away at
the polls due to purging? Is this only an election day phenomenon because GOPrs aren't manning the early polls sites?

I haven't seen any stories of people trying to vote and not being able to...except for those who can't wait in long lines. Is this due to court action or the caging plan hasn't been implemented yet?

5. They sent out letters in GA.
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 11:06 AM by redqueen
So people were informed they couldn't vote weeks ago.

And I guess now they'll send letters saying "wait, yes you can".

I hope they go out today.

7. While I am glad about the initial decision
Most likely letters are not going to get out in time. As you noted upthread there is still confusion as to whether or not the 50k voters are effected by the decision. Now they will ask for clarification, and that will take time. And then they will need time to identify all the effected voters, as they will have conveniently misplaced that information. By the time they are ready to send out letters my guess is it will be too late for them to arrive. This needs to be published heavily by the media. If possible the Obama campaign should seek to identify the effected voters and contact them directly about the decision.

8. I'm sure his team of lawyers is already on it.
It just burns me up that most likely nothing will be done to the evil creeps who did this. x(

4. The main question is what can anyone do about that before the electors go and use their vote?

6. No idea...
I'd like for there to be some investigation into why they tried to illegaly purge the voter rolls this close to an election.

Do they not know the law? Was there malfeasance? (That last question is rhetorical of course.)

15. Got info on six states when I Googled Voter Purges 2008
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/08/voter-purges-in-6-states_n_133175.html

There have been SO VERY MANY that it is hard to keep track and that's why I referred you to the specialty sites.

Some purge attempts have been stopped and some haven't.

Many purging incidents have been posted here and will continue to be.

19. I've seen some. But each Secretary of State does their own purges so
there are 50 separate stories at least.

I'm trying "K&R -- for the vote purging file" as a reply to each one. Then maybe later we can search DU threads for the words "vote purging file" and pull them together.

I think I've only seen around 10 here so far. And I'm not sure when I started doing a K&R with tracking them in mind.

14. GOP voting official tries to intimidate college students from voting
http://coloradoindependent.com/11555/balink-gop-backed-student-voter-disenfranchisement-rages-anew

Bob Balink is the County Clerk for El Paso County, Colorado. He is responsible for overseeing voting in the county.

"An ominous-sounding letter that ... Bob Balink sent to a journalism student at Colorado College has reignited a 3-week old controversy over his past erroneous assertion that out-of-state college students are not eligible to vote in Colorado.

In the latest controversy, Balink forwarded a letter to the CC student, written by an attorney whose firm has close ties to the Colorado Republican Party, warning of “cascading effects” that could happen if students vote in Colorado — including criminal penalties for not registering their cars in this state. Strong is an understatement for how Democratic elected officials and officers have responded, denouncing Balink for attempting to discourage students from voting.

Morse, along with other state Democratic Party officials, have scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Thursday in front of the clerk and recorder’s office in downtown Colorado Springs to denounce a letter that has been circulated by Balink about student voters as irresponsible and its message incorrect. They are also planning to demand that Balink, who is active in El Paso County GOP politics and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention last month, disclose his “relationship” with the Denver law firm that prepared the letter.

Late Wednesday Matt Farrauto, the spokesman for the Colorado Democratic Party, called the letter “ominous, scary and intimidating” to students who have been planning to vote in Colorado."
