I am thankful to see this day.
I grew up surrounded by racists and lived through the horrible period when Black citizens struggled to gain their Civil Rights. I saw Black men, women and young people beaten by police and kids abused at lunch counters as screaming mobs cheered them on. I never thought that I would see the day that a Black man or a White women would actually have a chance to be the President of the United States. Yes, we have come a long way, but it is such a shame that far too many of our fellow Americans cling to their hatred of their fellow mankind.

4. Thanks for your post
Sometimes I think that we on DU don't stop to appreciate the truly historical nature of this election. Of course the corporate media doesnt't want us to, and spends hours on trivia every day to distract from it. But thank you for the reminder, and I think we are all right there with you.:toast:

5. Me too, Ole Gramps.
Sometimes I almost forget how it was, but this election has brought it all back to me. Things are perfect, that's for certain, but things are so, so much better than they were then. This election is something I never thought I would see.
