when the 16th amendment was ratified. That's the one that gives the congress the power to create the federal income tax. ALL taxation of income is essentially a form of income redistribution; in a progressive system, those with large incomes pay more, because they benefit most from the protections and infrastructures provided by the federal government (obviously. Sheesh.). What Bush/McCain/Palin want is to make the tax system even more regressive than it already is: to do a reverse Robin Hood and steal from the middle class to give to the rich. If you ask me, it's a measure of the depths of racist fervor within the GOP that many McPalin supporters would rather vote themselves out of a tax cut than elect a black man. Astounding.
And one more thing: I think when this election is over, we're going to have a different map than the old, familiar red/blue model we've been looking at for the past few cycles. What we'll have instead is a map of racist America vs. decent, progressive America. I say if they want to secede after January 20th, this time we should let them.
