The Record (Bergen County, NJ, pop approx 900,000) - Obama For President
...We recommend Obama because we cannot continue the policies of Bush and we do not believe McCain can or would make the needed course corrections.

McCain and Palin have catered to a small view of America. But America's patriotism is not confined to the heartland or plains. It is evident in our cities and suburbs. It is seen clearly by all who look beyond lapel pins and Old Glory waving in a parade.

It is evident in the eyes of aging veterans and in the beaming faces of immigrants as they become citizens. It is evident in the tears of spouses kneeling at flag-marked gravesites. These are the American truths we hold self-evident.

Barack Obama embraces this expansive vision of America. Across the nation, men and women have been energized to register to vote, to participate in this great democracy and to believe that our better days are yet to come. Beyond the red and blue of political ideology, beyond the green of currency and beyond the black and white of racial lines still not erased, we are Americans.

We cannot know with surety that we will elect a great president. But we can be sure that we are a great nation. We are the agents of transformative change. We need a leader who recognizes that.

The Record endorses Barack Obama.

Barack Obama for president
Posted by Star-Ledger editorial board October 25, 2008 10:30PM
When voters went to the polls in 1932, Herbert Hoover's Republican Party had been in power for 14 years. The GOP's policies hadn't prevented the crash of 1929, and life for most Americans was still grim by the time the president sought reelection. Voters that year opted for change, trusting that a confident Franklin Delano Roosevelt would deliver on his promised New Deal.

The parallels today are inescapable.

Making the right choice for president is just as vital to the nation's future today as it was in the midst of the Great Depression.

Barack Obama offers America an opportunity to get back on track. His uniquely American story can inspire people from all walks of life to once again believe in what their country can accomplish.
