Brothers and sisters, DON'T freak out that McCain is "guaranteeing" a win.
This is not the scary harbinger that you might think it is for election theft. This is not the same as Bush and Jeb "guaranteeing" that they'd win Florida, as he did so memorably in Fahrenheit 9/11. These are not the droids you're look for. Move along.

What this means, I feel, is that McCain KNOWS he's going to lose. And why do I think this? Because only politicians certain of defeat guarantee a victory. Notice that Obama almost never says he's certain he'll win--he alludes to "taking back our country" a lot, but rarely says he fully expects to win. Why? Because, as has been stated so often, he doesn't want his supporters to get over-confident. (Too much confidence is the sort of problem you WANT to have the week before the election.)

And with McCain, it's just the opposite. He knows morale is low. He knows his internals look bad. He knows his chance of winning is, from every angle, very very VERY slim at this point. So his guarantee is a last-ditch reassurance to his supporters that victory is possible--because he knows that if he told the truth, NO ONE would show-up. He knows it's probably going to be a loss--now, he wants to prevent it from becoming a Reagan|Mondale landslide.

McCain is not deluded and he's not about to pull the greatest electoral heist of the century--he wouldn't have the money, resources, or political capital to do that right now. Much as John Edwards, Mike Huckabee, and yes, even Hillary Clinton did in the primary, he's simply trying to save face at this point.

I guarantee it.

2. What? You couldn't have posted this five minutes ago?
I'm sending what is probably my last message to DU from my bathtub. I just slit my wrists after hearing McFailedCampaignHasRunOutOfStunts guarantee victory just like the gipper or joe namath or something. It's too late for me. Thanks for nothing.....

3. He didn't really guarantee a win, just that it will be close
and that he thinks he will win and it will be a late night.

Look at his wording, even he isn't ignorant enough to put guarantee and win in the same sentence.

6. Thank you. Some of us are still suffering from PTSD.

And need people like yourself to calm us down. Even the thought of McCain somehow ending up in the WH is too horrifying to contemplate and I start getting an anxiety attack. When I start going off on that, I wish someone were nearby to give me a good slap in the face.

9. Oh, I am so there with you.
I do not want a repeat of 2000 and 2004. I think I'd start packing up my shit the very next day if that happened. I don't care how much money we'd lose on unloading the house in this market or how tough it'd be to relocate on a moment's notice. We're moving to Canada in 2010 anyway, but we'd seriously accelerate that schedule if those freaks "won" the election.

7. We have 9 days to prove him wrong.
What are each of us doing to make sure this does not happen?

8. I don't worry about it.
I mean, yeah, what is he supposed to say? "Sorry, folks, but it looks like we're going to lose no matter what you do, so please don't bother going to the polls"? Duh.

10. Exactly. Thank you. What do people expect?
McCain to come out and say "I'm going to get my ass kicked SO bad!"?
OF COURSE he's going to say "We're going to win!" If he were 30 points behind he would be saying it.
