Is Barbara West the first person to quote Karl Marx during a radio or TV show?
(besides historical documentaries)

======================================

Bsrbara West on Orlando, Florida TV with Joe Biden via satellite:

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/10/biden_tv_interviewer_hits_new.html

WEST: You may recognize this famous quote: "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." That's from Karl Marx. How is Senator Obama not being a Marxist if he intends to spread the wealth around?

BIDEN: Are you joking? Is this a joke?

WEST: No.

BIDEN: Is that a real question?

WEST: That's a question.

1. And what do you bet that she didn't even pay a lick of attention
to her History teacher back in high school on Marx -- or likely anyone else much either.

Biden handled her beautifully.

Hi, Eric J. Go Franken. Go Tinklenberg.

3. Biden was great, but I'm sure he didn't expect such a hideous approach from that hag.
She's got meaness all over her face. She seemed so bitter. And frankly she appeared fearful, like so many others, about life without the neocons at the helm. Imagine being scared of THAT.

6. Yep. She and a whole bunch of other GOP loyalists and shills are going to
be in for a very disappointing evening a week from this Tuesday.

2. She demonstrates that she has zero understanding of the meaning of that quote and
Marxist philosophy in general. She knows that the murican public has a deep seated fear of anything that sounds vaguely foreign and is milking that fear.

Come on West, the manifesto is a short, easily readable (less easy to understand) book. There are no monsters or scary things beyond a social philosophy that may be a bit different than your own.

4. It's not even a particularly objectionable quotation

"From each according to his ability to each according to his need."

It sounds faintly Christian, if anything.

Does Obama REALLY want to help people in need??? How awful!!!!

Sorry. As somebody who's read Capital (all three volumes) and the Grundrisse, I think she could have picked out some dandies that would piss off ignorant Americans much more than Marx's statement that people who are able should help people in need! It's not Marxism; it's basic ethical conduct.

5. She now has a dubious distinction. First anchor to promote the Communist Manifesto
on American airwaves

9. Wow, quoting a docuement from 1848!
>> A spectre is haunting Europe—the spectre of Communism. All the Powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Pope and Czar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies.
Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as Communistic by its opponents in power? Where is the Opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of Communism, against the more advanced opposition parties, as well as against its reactionary adversaries?

The bourgeoisie, wherever it has got the upper hand, has put an end to all feudal, patriarchal, idyllic relations. It ... has left remaining no other nexus between man and man than naked self-interest, than callous “cash payment” ... for exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, it has substituted naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation ...-wikipedia<<

Look at where the world was in 1848, the dawn of the industrial revolution and the status of workers.

Aren't people conflating Stalinist USSR with communism?
