Yesterday was a great day. The day started at 9 with a rally at Democratic Headquarters. I drove past looking for a parking place, and could see the many people walking toward the store front. El Tinklenberg walked in as I drove by the door. I had to drive several blocks away to get a spot. Went back and the place was full, as I walked in and the bells rang 9. There was breakfast and coffee donated by progressive businesses. I tried to walk by the check in tables, but was grabbed and handed a sheet to fill out to GOTV in the following week. I got handshakes and hugs from people I knew, but most of the people there I hadn't seen before. I found a friend and a corner. A local Dem introduced El, who gave a great speech talking about how we volunteers had laid the groundwork that has enabled the campaign to take advantage of Michelle's words on Hardball. He talked about a week ago Friday, being at a hockey game and not hearing his cell phone, then checking it and seeing the number of missed calls and messages. He talked about Michelle's latest ad where she says she doesn't always use the right words, but her heart is right. I would like to put her heart up against the hearts of the rest of the people in that room.
He was followed by a local state house representative who always reminds me of Hubert Humphrey when he speaks. He used Michelle's words that her heart is right. He talked about cutting health care for children, "That's not my heart." He talked about keeping one gay partner away from the hospital, "that's not my heart." He talked about failing to provide adequate services for others, "that's not my heart."
Another state rep got there late, he talked about not being able to find a parking space and then walking past the headquarters and not being able to see in because the windows were completely fogged up. He spoke from his heart about the difference that electing democrats will make in the lives of the elderly, our children, ourselves.
From my corner, I tried to get a count, and it was at least 125 people there, probably more. Last weekend there were 50 volunteers at the Dem headquarters and 12 at the GOP. (No report on GOP volunteers this weekend.
We were then sent out to door knock. I was paired up with a genxer who had never doorknocked before. It was great to watch his enthusiasm. He said, "I just speak from my heart to each person." He talked with an African American who had never voted before. When people said they were conservative, he gave them the brochures of the more conservative candidates who are running. We did run into the owner of one patio complex. He told us he was 72 and knew "they" all were a bunch of crooks. He said if we were older, we'd understand. I told him my dad is 88 and a WWII Vet who'd disagree with him. He told us he was a Korean War Vet and my dad was raised wrong. So we moved on. At one house a Springer Spaniel leaped out of the garage barking at me, as I backed down the driveway, the door opened and a man yelled out, "Are you ok?" I told him I was fine, and just asking people to vote. He said, "Keep your literature, we're a Democratic household and we are voting." I told him I liked his dog.
It was a beautiful day. People were friendly. Volunteers were smiling.
Once again, thanks to all who donated to www.tinklenberg08 I want you to know that we in 6th District are doing all we can to merit your donations.
